Pakistan carried out a series of deadly military strikes on what it said were separatist militant hideouts inside Iran, in the the latest incident across their shared border that has sent tensions between the two neighbors soaring.

Amid rising tension in India's neighbourhood, the US government was asked whether it would step in to aid Pakistan in case its conflict with Iran escalates. Earlier, US President Joe Biden said that he did not know where the Tehran-Islamabad face-off was headed. Pakistan on January 18 conducted "precision strikes" on Iranian territory, mimicking Tehran's action from two days earlier.
