Parents question relevance of Kuru Kuru Training College

February 16, 2014 | By | Filed Under News

Some parents and guardians of children attending the Kuru Kuru Training Centre, along the Soesdyke/Linden Highway which is managed by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports are up in arms at the treatment being meted out to their young ones who were selected to attend the learning institution.  They are asking about the real purpose of the Kuru Kuru Training Centre? The parents expressed their annoyance and disgust in being told of what their young ones have to go through. They spoke of lack of specified lectures, of the students having to dig holes for garbage, pluck chickens and weed grass during what is supposed to be time for instructional training. Specifically affected are students of the Motor Mechanics Class which numbers 20. The all-male class has been without the Motor Mechanics lecturer since January 17, after the teacher left the job. As a result, the students were left on their own, not having any classes to attend and the administrator not paying them β€˜no mind’. Their enquiries brought hardship with them being assigned to digging holes for garbage, plucking chicken and weeding during the heat of the day. They got a few days reprieve when they were offered Mathematics and English classes. However for reasons unknown, the Mathematics teacher left the job along with one of the two Social Workers. The students have since been forced to return to digging holes, weeding, plucking chicken and other odd janitorial jobs.  According to the parents, the students have become frustrated and many are opting to leave the Centre, instead of continuing to waste more time. The parents stated that their young ones were sent from their homes, to seek an alternative form of learning but having no lecturers and being forced to do odd jobs during instructional time is atrocious. According to information, the youths are expected to undergo work-study in a few weeks at various organizations, and they are wondering how they will cope, when they are not getting any proper training. They stated that many promises made at the commencement of the course have not been fulfilled. A parent reminded that Minister Dr. Frank Anthony had stated at a press briefing that the students will be exposed to driving lessons, so that at the end of their tenure, they would have acquired two skills. However, according to reports the driving course has not commenced, because no vehicle is available .They were also told that only selected persons can pursue the driving classes. If any non-selected person wants to be involved, he will have to swap his six weeks on the job training. A senior official in the Ministry stated that he was not familiar with the situation, but promised to launch an immediate investigation. He assured that corrective action will be taken.
