PARLIAMENT in my opinion is now seemingly hopeless, and as the Minister of Home Affairs said, “unworkable.” The combined opposition has contaminated the highest decision-making forum of our country with their saturated political partisanship mode which can no longer serve the vital interests of the Guyanese people. I hope I am proven wrong about this.
The results of the recent elections expressed the will of the Guyanese people for the parties in Parliament to work together for Guyana’s social and economic development. But little did they know that they provided both the APNU and the AFC with a task they are unable to manage. It is like giving a five-year-old child a loaded gun to play with. The election of a Speaker of our Parliament is a glaring example.
The AFC boasts about ‘holding the balance of power’ but is he politically capable of using this ‘balance of power’ in the best interests of the Guyanese people? I do not believe so, and so are the vast majority of the Guyanese people.
But the combined opposition would be tested when the budget is presented to parliament. If they vote against the budget, then in fact they would be voting against the thousands of public sector workers who would not be able to receive their wages and salaries.
It is as simple as this. No budget, no money, no money no salary. Also, Guyana’s development programme would come to an immediate halt, and the people would suffer. Fresh election would therefore have to be announced by his Excellency the President, and it would be interesting to see how the opposition fares this time around.
