Kalyan Etwaru’s house and church located at Letter Kenny, Corentyne Berbice

A Corentyne Pastor was on Thursday morning beaten and robbed of $250,000 in offerings from his Letter Kenny Full Gospel Church.

Two bandits entered 45-year-old Kalyan Etwaru’s Lot 12 B, Letter Kenny Village, Corentyne, Berbice home at about 01:10hrs on Thursday.

Etwaru known as Pastor Rohan told the News Room that he was awoken to the sounds of shattering glass in the lower flat of his home. He said he first thought the noise was caused by cats that made their way into the house, but when he ventured down to investigate, he came face-to-face with two men who were climbing his inside step armed with a gun and cutlass.

Etwaru pastors the Letter Kenny Full Gospel Church which is situated next door; he said the men demanded he hand over the keys to the “money box” which belongs to the Church.

Astonished, he told them he is not in possession of the keys but the men proceeded to kick him about his body and gunbut him to the head.

“The guy with the gun punched me as I fell to the ground and he kicked me and asking for the keys”.

The man who is also a Secondary School teacher told the News Room that “the money box” is in the church and was made for donation towards a building project.

He added, he was very surprised when the bandits specifically asked for the box noting that it did not contain a lot of cash.

Etwaru said he was taken in the upper flat as the men searched and ransacked the house for cash and valuables.

“He pointed the gun straight to my forehead and said, hand over the money or I will shoot,” the man recalled.

The bandits managed to grab $250,000 in cash and made their escape by scaling the fence at the rear of the yard.

The Pastor said he is still in severe pain especially to the back and head.

He said the money taken was raised for a missionary in the interior, and it was from offerings collected from members of the church.

Police investigation is ongoing.

WRONG!!! Church money is for converting nonchristian to Christianity so they can get more members to give their last two pennies thus increasing their wealth. That money is used to buy expensive jets for the pastors, build luxury homes, equip the church with the latest technology, buy expensive sound equipment...and I could go on and on.

Looks like you are brainwashed by some religious fanatic. If you can prove to me there is God, I will follow that religion. Did God write you a letter or phone you at any anytime? Did you ever see God? How come you know there is a God? Heaven and hell are just here on earth. It's called Karma. Religion is for people who are confused about heaven and hell.

I remember him saying he changed his name. Was his first name Mohamed, Muhamad, Mahamood or Abdul? Strange that a Christian is embracing Islam.

Stop talking shyte. The church helps needy and the forgotten!  Many end up at the church and begin to follow. Don’t blame them, the Catholic Church becomes a support structure!  This is why Hindus in India convert. The church becomes the support structure!

Fortunately Muslims are exposed to the tenets of their faith almost from birth and perhaps that helps them with that support structure you may be talking about. I remember that every weekday afternoon we went to madrasah where we learned to pray, read the Qur'an in Arabic as well as teachings of Islam. We also learn to read Urdu which we used to sing those Muslim songs. We did not learn to understand Arabic or Urdu though but resorted to understanding what we were reading by reading the English translation. It was only later on that there were opportunities to learn to understand Arabic. By that time, many Guyanese Muslims gave up on the Urdu. I think that generally, Muslims are more aware of the tenets of their faith than people of other faiths. Christians are pretty aware of the main tenet of Christianity but I think many are not familiar with the broader aspect of it. I think Hindus do themselves a disservice by buying into the general assumption that their religion is confusing and this lend opportunities for organizations like the church to enter their world. Christian churches have very small successes on converting Muslims to Christianity. I remember reading once where a Christian Missionary said he spent a quarter of a century in Pakistan and was hardly successful in his mission. He said that the Pakistanis are very stubborn.

Admit that the church takes care of themselves before the poor. I worked for a Christian religious non-profit organization in the early 70s. I know what the hell I am talking about. It's worse today than before.
Some Hindu pandits are worse. They steal the money and then run away with another man's wife.

I’m not talking about Hindu pandits! We know they like hustle women!

And yes, there are religious organizations which serve themselves before the poor. However, by far most help the poor and downtrodden.

The problem, when they get big and need to hire managers, they might have their own agenda.

So I am not: talking shyte? You even see these bastards on TV begging the old poor women to send their last $2 to them. I have seen the stuff they sent out telling people that God needs their help to spread Christianity throughout the world. Believe me, I have seen the letters they sent out every 2-3 months fleecing the old people.

I’m not talking about them pastors and TV preachers getting rich.  I’m referring to church organizations on the ground close to those suffering. These TV preachers are in business!

This is how these organizations work. They send out a proxy bank check. They write the person's name and address on top of the blank check. Everything else looks like a real check. Everything else is pre-printed. The donor fills in the amount, the routing number, the bank's name, and account number and the amount. Signs and that's it. Send it back in a pre-paid non-profit organization envelope. Money in the bank.
