Payroll specialist allegedly defrauds Vaughan employer out of $395,000

Stack A 30-year-old Brampton woman is accused of defrauding her former employer out of $395,000 by doctoring the company’s payroll.

York Regional Police say officers from the Financial Crimes Unit launched an investigation in July 2017 after the suspected fraud was reported.

“The accused at the time was a payroll specialist at a technology based company in Vaughan,” Const. Laura Nicolle said Thursday.

Between June 26, 2015, and July 7, 2017, she said it’s alleged the accused “re-activated a former employee’s payroll and changed the payroll deposit information to her own personal account.”

“The accused then (allegedly) increased the hourly pay rate and added numerous bonuses over the two years,” Nicolle said.

After eight months of investigating, Nazia Zaman was arrested on March 26.

She is charged with one count each of fraud over $5,000 and possession of proceeds of crime.

The accused is scheduled to appear in Newmarket court on May 10.

“The investigation is ongoing,” Nicolle said.

Anyone with information regarding this case should call the Financial Crimes Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6612, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
