State-run oil holding Petróleos de Venezuela (Pdvsa) will continue to use its agreements with the People's Republic of China; on this occasion, Caracas is to purchase Chinese drilling rigs for oil development and production.
Venezuela's Minister of Energy and Petroleum Rafael Ramírez said that Pdvsa would import 138 rigs from China. He added that other 20 rigs that are being built in Venezuela.
The Venezuelan official said: "We are making our oil industry autonomous and independent of the United States." He stressed that the Venezuelan government "is responsible for protecting our oil industry from the repeated attacks of the US Department of State," which "is desperate in view of the depletion of (oil) resources" which Washington can no longer obtain easily from Venezuela, Ramírez said.
Petróleos de Venezuela's sources have said that the company has 140 drills operating in development and production activities, for an output of some 2.8 million barrels per day (bpd).
To meet production goals at the Orinoco Oil Belt, Pdvsa should at least double the current number of rigs in order to reach 6 million bpd by 2019.
