The Rally will not be at Player's Restaurant

Something is not kosher here. This episode started out as a hate crime ie people were trying to bash and beat up a gay man. Now we are told that it will be about sensitivity and education and that lady with the TV show says it's all about anti-violence. Here are some questions:

1. Is it true that Zaman and his boys started the fight?

2. Is it true that the tassa guy was pushed out of the restaurant by a mob and was attacked on his head with a bottle?

3. Is it true that Zaman was somewhere else in the melee and was hit or could have been hit accidentally?

4. Is it true that the restaurant has a tape that shows all of the above clearly?

5. Is it true that Vishnu Mahadeo saw the tape?

6. If Vishnu did what is his take on it?

 7. Is it true that those planning the rally know that their man and his people started the fracas and that is why they have changed the rally to a 'different direction' as Vishnu's says?

8. Is the lady from the TV trying to save face by saying that this is not a hate crime anymore?

9. If it is not a hate crime will Vishnu and the rest apologize for misleading the public?

10. Who at the rally will apologize to the tassa player or even mention the fact that he was another victim, if this is about 'sensitivity and education?

Finally, Kari, Chief, Jalil etc live in New York and they should have a better idea. We await answers to these questions.

someone has to hate somebody to put such a lash on the head of another. That this fellow was gay could mean he did get that lash because he was perceived to be a gay guy. Whatever the case may be, this is Guyanese behaving badly and someone has to pay. Vishnu need to come here and tell us what he knows if he does indeed know.

Why you think you need to explain to us what "hate" is.  We lived it first hand in Guyana and you saw what the hateful Buxton FF's did to those poor men, women and children in Lusignan.

Ronald, I was at the rally, and for full disclosure the organizers of the rally are people with whom I worked with in presenting cultural shows in our community in New York.

The organizers were passionate about the attack and it wasn't just because the victim was homosexual. It was about this kind of conduct not being tolerated in the Richmond Hill community.

As far as what took place, the official police records will state what it is. I can only say that there was reporting that after the surveillance tapes were viewed the victim was apparently the aggressor and hence the altercation.

The organizers' message was that this behavior must not be tolerated whatever the victim's orientation.

There were a lot of cops and some a Councilman addressed the gathering.

What has Vishnu got to do with this anyhow?

Kari
Ronald et al,

Here is my response to your questions:

Most of my comments will be based on the video and at the "Rally"

1 The Clip showed a young woman jumping on the back of the "300 lbs 6 ft Tassa Player". then  within seconds 5 to 6 young men started to assaulted the tassaplayer with bottles on his head. this lasted for 30 seconds or more. The clip did not show who hit Zaman.

2 As per the Players Restaurant rep, Zaman and his troupe with the Tassa Players were thrown out for disruptive behaviour

3 This was not on the CLIP

4 tape is available to all to view

5 yes I saw the CLIP

6 thru **

RHEDC was asked to review the matter. Based on the info we collected we approached the co-ordinators Richard David from the ICA and Shabana from the Jahaji Sisters and asked for a change in focus. RHEDC was against the proposed picketing of the business as none except Rohan Narine viewed the video clip. It was agreed by Shabana that there will be no reference to Zaman nor the business. The focus will be on Peace and Unity. The site will be moved from in front of Players to another site. RHEDC also suggested that the rally will get more visibility if it is along Liberty Ave as there was recent death of a youngman in front of Ultra level lounge.

The outcome was different as many speakers spoke of Gay Pride and BIAS. The co-ordinators did not honor their commitment or lost control. RHEDC informed all the elected who were present about the shift in focus. Zaman made an emotional presentation.

Vish, Kari thanks for the info. From what Vish is saying the cordinators 'did not honor commitments or lost control' It is clear from Vish that the tassa player was first attacked but was he mentioned at the Rally? This is violence too and the tape shows that the tassa player did not start it. This could be 'tassa bashing' rather than gay bashing.

But there are other issues. A young man was killed by Moka and another one in Liberty Avenue a month after and no rally was held. Zaman's rally started as gay bashing but had to be changed because it was felt that he was not the victim but his people were the perpetrators. Is this a correct assumption?
