PM lauds local Honda investor – at sod turning for new showroom

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds this evening joined in turning the sod at the site of the new Honda headquarters at Lot 186-187 Charlotte Street, Georgetown.

In brief remarks the Prime Minister noted that the Honda Company, which started in 1937 and has since become the one of the largest companies in the world, known for quality products and service, should be an example for all persons to follow, noting that, “If we want a better life, then we have to become better at the work we do”.

Himself, an owner of a Honda Cub 90 moped in 1966, the Prime Minister recalled that it served him well when he was a work study student during that period. The new owner of the Honda franchise locally, Managing Director John Permaul was also congratulated for his foresight and his courage to invest in Honda.

The company was purchased in July 2011 from the Mendonca family, after decades of operation, by John Permaul who in a brief speech said that he intends to improve on the service and number of vehicles offered by the company.

The response from customers since he acquired the company motivated his further investment locally, Permaul said.

As part of the ceremony, the businessman launched a Honda Big Tent Promotion which offers customers a 5% discount and a chance to win a hamper. One lucky customer will also win a generator.

An artist’s impression of the new company headquarters was unveiled and according Permaul, it will feature a state-of-the-art showroom and a modern, technologically equipped service center. The multi-million dollar facility is expected to be completed by October of this year.

Well I call them all cars...but you are right. Some people call them crossovers.  Marics always sold Honda expensive. Well Beharry sold Toyota expensive also.

Yes Charlotte St is where the old Marics was at. We used to go there with our bata to fantasize over the cars.

There was a motorcycle store which carried bikes that looked a bit like the Itam bikes (small stinkpots) also on Charlotte St just past Wellington. I remember some nice girls dem living above the store, it was a few doors away from what I believe was called...Charlie's Inn.

I would not know about Charlie's Inn.

Stanley Ming is the agent for Yamaha and Misubishi Motors and was never a Honda dealer. Mario Mendonca and his wife were the owners of the old Marics.

This business is at the same spot, next to Maraj Bldg on Charlotte St.

The new owner of Marics, John Permaul is a very progressive young Guyanese entrepreneur. He is also the owner of Jialing Motor Cycle store. This guy rose from a mechanic from LBI estate to one of the leading entreperneurs in Guyana.

Congratulations to him.

I cannot recall any Charlie's Inn next to Marics but there was a *****house beween Marics and Strand Cinema, where Beharry now have their Toyota showroom, called Pakera or Pakaraima.

Thanks for clarifying that. So as a kid I was confusing Mitsibishi for Hondas.  Balwant is this guy the first official Honda dealer in Guyana?

The first official dealer for Honda in Guyana was Marics and Co.Ltd, previously owned by Mario Mendonca and his wife. I think that business was established sometime in the 1950's. I bought my first Honda Accord from them in 1982. I know Mrs. Menonca very well. She is very old now and retired.

Oh ok...so Marics did deal with Hondas at one time. Hondas are great but expensive. Are they more expensive than Toyotas or Nissans in Guyana? What about Mitsibishi?

FM

For Jalanese vehicles, Honda is the most expensive car including spares. But in my opinion Hondas are the most reliable of all the Japanese vehicles for performance and durability. The CRVs are great.

CRVs are great indeed. But I think the 2013 Toyota Rav4 might just have equaled or better the CRVs.
