There is need clearly for what should constitute a vending structures. I would like a rule like in Washington dc where no permanent structures can be established and no vending except by permit predominantly displayed and worn by vendors in designated spaces. DC only give out about 1000 such permits and it is a dozen time larger in population with fluctuations of tourists and inflows of workers taking it up to about 2 million people a day.

Let's not forget there is a human story here, regardless of race. These poor, poverty stricken people no longer have a means of income and lost even the goods they had. The coalition needs to clearly map out a strategy for creating jobs and getting these folks out of poverty. At the very least, give them an area where they can sell their goods. They are, after all, willing to work and not teef.

D2 is a typical Liberal.  He likes the poor in concept, but hates them in reality.

Guyana is a sordid mess of corruption.  Rich business people are engaging in drug and gun smuggling, and the illegal trade of fuel and gold. They do not pay their taxes, and are in breach of many laws.  Yet they suffer NO consequences.

But as I have often said APNU and AFC elites do not like hot sun!

Did they work with the vendors to develop a mall in a well traficked area, with all the amenities necessary for a sanitary environment?  Did they inform the vendors of a schedule that they needed to adhere to?  Did they PUBLICIZE this well to the public?

Or is there the arrogance that "we in power now so we don' need dese people any more".  Well LGE is coming.  The economy is slowing.  The PPP is waging an aggressive campaign against them, using the Guyana Times.

I believe the Mayor and City Council should have shown more sensitivity in handling the problem with the Bourda vendors.

At the same time, I cannot help observing yuji's opportunism in finding common cause with those vendors.

Whenever it suits yuji's purpose, he "embraces" black people, as he did with Vanessa Kissoon and Africo Selman.

As a rule, though, to further his political cause, yuji doesn't hesitate to tar and feather them with ugly adjectives.

In an understandably emotional mood, the vendors feel betrayed, but the M & CC did not deliberately set out to betray them. There is need to tighten up slack screws in the city, so to speak.

I would not be surprised that when Mayor Green's team moves to remove illegal encumbrances and structures set up by Indo businesses, we will hear a new wave of "ethnic cleansing" howls here.

APNU/AFC are determined to ensure that the PPP restores its image in the LGE.  Of course the PPP will take advantage of infighting within the APNU support base, which is why APNU is dumb to be so stupid to pull off that stunt.

Even as people wonder how come no "big ones" have been brought before the courts to explain their illegal behavior.  Even as the economy IS WEAKENING, thanks to a deteriorating gold sector, this heavily impacting this grass roots APNU base.  APNU pulls this stunt.

There is a serious problem of class with in APNU and the reality is that the APNU elites have little more respect for their grass roots element than does the PPP elite.  Only problem is APNU benefits from this grass roots element, whose very high turn out is what put APNU/AFC in power.

So APNU told them to paint their stalls green and yellow and then early one morning breaks down the stalls and damages these peoples' inventory.

If LGE rolls around and they go back to these people and talk "love & unity, peace & harmony" and "PPP baad", the folks might respond "carry you so and so and y'all no better!".

Just remember that in poor families one income earner feeds many others!

The stalls had to be removed. No argument there, but there is a better way that it could have been done.  This is another black eye (pun intended) that APNU has given itself, after that big pay increase for themselves which they were "discussing".

APNU/AFC are a bunch of idiots who just get in their own way!

Rules are not about ivory towers. Rules are for propriety and proper conduct in the community. If the rules explicity states people are not to squat on private property or parapits or sidewalks then so be it.

There must be standards. As I look at those structures they are a disgrace. They serve to detract from the necessity for beautification and sanitation as a premium.

These people are indeed poor and feel a genuine sense of loss. They must be empathized with and also accommodated in some way but not as breakers of the law.

Unfortunately, the accommodation should have been provided before it escalated to this point...unless we are not getting the whole story.

I have little more respect for the PNC/APNU than I do for the PPP.  The PPP were there too long and needed to go, and APNU/AFC need to get focused, develop ideas, and cease harassing the vulnerable, while they allow the powerful to do what they wish.

Any of them in front of the courts yet?

Poor optics by APNU.  There could have been a BETTER way to solve this problem.

Please be assured that Grainger isn't that popular in those grass roots circles.  With the PPP gone (for the time being) these sentiments will increasingly come to the fore, and the PPP will watch, and watch and watch.

Lucky for APNU that the PPP is so fundamentally racist that they haven't come up with a solution.  Were they a little smarter, they could have used this as a wedge to build G/town support in these grass roots circles.

Here is the probably story.  Some rich man bought that old building and wants it pulled down so he called City Council and told them to get rid of the vendors.

City Council TOLD the SAME vendors to paint their stalls yellow and green for elections. WHY if these stalls were such a disgrace?  And also why is City Council saying that they might allow them back to the SAME spot once the building is pulled down!

APNU is playing a dangerous game.  With plummeting gold prices and dwindling gold production life is getting harder for poor people who feel the pain as soon as less cash is  moving about. The PPP (through Guyana Times) has a well orchestrated plot to blame this on the coalition gov't.

Then up comes APNU, with their normal stupid selves, and pull this stunt, just like they tried the one with the huge pay increases.

There could have been a humane way to deal with the problem, and if the vendors refused to cooperate, APNU could have mounted a well orchestrated media campaign to inform the public of this, BEFORE destroying these structures.

APNU did NOT do so, and now the PPP is making a huge advantage of it.  Come LGE they will get their supporters out, while that black grass roots stay home. APNU, will win the mayoralty, but less convincingly than they ought to, and will seriously look like they are losing support.

Some one help stop these people! 2 AM bar closing. 75% pay increase. DUMB, DUMB, DUMB!

You weren't around when Carib trolled the Internet daily for negative posts about indo-Guyanese to regurgitate on GNI. You weren't around when Carib was screaming about an angry coolie mob hell-bent on revenge against the black man. I am proud to say that yours truly made Carib admit he was programmed by his mother to hate the coolie.

Perhaps Carib was recently enlightened, but there has been more than enough evidence of his racism.

The point is institutions and rules exist for the benefit of order out of chaos. No statement has been forwarded supporting that these people were compliant with institutional codes or t hat the codes are deficient. They were on public side walk, parapets and in front of businesses. If you think these businesses are corrupt then that is another story but does not provide the basis for the " poor" to squat.

That benn buldozed stalls is not evidence that the APNU buldozing stalls are wrong. The thrust here is quality of life sanitation, through-way and health interests. They  supersede the imploration that "I am poor and I need to break the law to survive".  A junkie is a pitiful, lost soul in need of urgent intervention to survive because he/she is surely on the path to die  while  causing serious harm on the way but no one excuses their bad behavior. These people are in need of help but this is not the help that is salutary for quality of life in the state. Help would be ordered removal and opportunity to relocate. Antabanta in those days you were taking medications.

1.  I offered evidence that Indians were no better off than blacks. And that Asian Indians view Guyanese Indians as inferior.  And that Indians go to Barbados, carrying their racist attitudes, which we see displayed here, ad that black Bajans, who have their own issues with white Bajans, weren't going to tolerate that.

This when many here were daily posting negative black imagery, and as we see nothing has changed.

2.  I said precisely the opposite.  My MIXED RACE mother, who herself had experienced racism from blacks and others, raised me to NOT think about race.  You were on meds so you thought otherwise.

3.  Your screams about me talking about "coolie mobs" either referenced the 60s, or AGAIN was you on medication.

GNI used to have a balanced number of blacks and Indians.  Because of the racism on GNI almost all of the blacks left, and in fact an alternate Guyanese forum was created.  This board is basically an Indian board, with the vast majority engaging in varying degrees of racism against blacks.

I am not distracting from a thing. The vendors were allowed to ply their trade and, the high levels of unemployment in G/town led it to reach tremendous levels.  City Council LONG AGO, should have develop humane ways of reconciling the need for these people to earn a living, with the need for the city to remain sanitary and uncongested.

APNU used these vendors, as they know that they are people of influence within their networks.  They encouraged them to paint their stalls yellow and green and to have party ads placed on them.  WHY if these vendors were engaging in "unlawful" behavior?

Now that they have won, the election, and in typical APNU stupidity and short sightedness, they think that they don't need these people.

I expect the PPP to unilaterally bull doze stalls, because these are hard core PNC people.  I expect the PNC to develop LONG TERM ways to resolve the problem. I even outlined a methodology to deal with this TWICE!

And WHAT strategies has APNU/AFC outlined to help poor people?

WHAT are they supposed to do while these strategies are being implemented?

Just be glad that these aren't the predatory poor who engage in violent crime.

It would have been simple to;

1. sit down with the vendors, outlining the concept of a vendor's mall, and working out with the vendors where this could be located.

2. developing the mall with full amenities.

3. licensing the vendors and only allowing these licensed vendors to use the mall.

4. establishing a process where the same carts, which you describe, could be set up and SECURE storage be found.  This for those who cannot afford to pay rent to be in the mall.

5.  The vendors could also be trained to run proper business, in the hope that some of them would emerge as full tax paying corporations, with a payroll.

THIS is what I expect from a party which got lots of support from these people.  NOT Benn style "bruk dem down".

But any way the PPP is gleeful as APNU has proven itself to be insensitive.  As earnings in gold dwindle, earnings from vending become more important.  And APNU "bruk dem down", without compensating the people for their loss of inventory.  LGE will come around and many poorer blacks will behave as they did in 2006. STAYING AWAY from the polls.

Who is going to suffer? APNU< because it doesn't appear to these people that APNU is any better than the PPP. The oligarchs still engage in Crime with NO CONSEQUENCES.

They do not get to choose the parapets and private property/

It would have been simple to;

1. sit down with the vendors, outlining the concept of a vendor's mall, and working out with the vendors where this could be located.

2. developing the mall with full amenities.

3. licensing the vendors and only allowing these licensed vendors to use the mall.

4. establishing a process where the same carts, which you describe, could be set up and SECURE storage be found.  This for those who cannot afford to pay rent to be in the mall.

5.  The vendors could also be trained to run proper business, in the hope that some of them would emerge as full tax paying corporations, with a payroll.

the real levels of unemployment ranges from 15 to 25 percent and this is not local to Georgetown or endemic to black people. Guyanese are some 35 to 40 percent in deep poverty so here again we cannot be differential in our dispensation of remedies or overly liberal in our tolerances. No Guyanese should use poverty as an excuse to break the law. It matters not that the previous government permitted these sorts of squatting. I it breaks rules and if it does it is to be addressed.

No one disagrees with enforcing the laws. The issue is HOW it was done. Leaving these folks destitute does no one any good. There should have been a plan constructed by one of the dozens of ministries to enforce the laws and provide an alternative(s) to these people. Caribj had a pretty good first stab at a plan. Acting like brutes while families are left destitute is not a plan.

There is a teefman at GPL who pocketed 27 million dollars, hasn't returned a penny and is free as a bird. Why is he not accorded the same acrimony dished out on these vendors? This coalition is both puzzling and mystifying in their approach to things.

Your feeble attempt to comfuffle the issue clearly shows you haven't changed much. You're still deceitful and dishonest. Keep the BS for the idiots on the forum who you can fool.

I will suggest to you that vendors are NOT considered unemployed, but must support those who are. So now you endorse adding MORE to the already high levels of unemployment.

They are mainly among the 40% impoverished, scratching a living, some no doubt having their kids also selling instead of going to school. Guyana having the HIGHEST rate of child employment/drip out at the PRIMARY level within the English speaking Caribbean, because we have some of the most deep seated poverty.

APNU used these people to get into power by encouraging them to paint their stalls green and yellow and allow signs to be affixed to their stalls.  They then represent themselves as your typical politicians, and then we wonder why people don't vote.

So if these people are CRIMINALS, in your book, why did APNU use them?

So what do you expect these people to do?  Go hold up people with guns, or sell their bodies on the street, because that is how SUBSTANTIAL numbers of people earn a living these days?

In urban areas there are only limited ways which uneducated and unemployed people can earn a living, given that unemployment is high.  These aren't rural people who can plant a few bush and then go sell it.  You also disapprove of those who go in the interior for gold.

Is it that you think that urban poor people should be on the streets BEGGING?  As if G/town has a shortage of those who do indeed engage in that activity!

So seriously what options do you have for this people when they voted for a government which now wants to box food out of their mouths, rather than regularizing them into proper facilities as I described.

Apparently you don't think that the government should have engaged the vendors to develop a humane and PERMANENT solution to this problem!

BTW do you know for a fact that all of those vendors are blacks? The Indo KKK highlighted an Indo man, who was protesting with these blacks, and who seems to have received a good dose of African bigotry for doing so, much to the delight of the Indo KKK of course.

I asked you then what is racist and I asked you again.  Then you LIED and claimed that my mother told me to hate Indians, when I said the OPPOSITE.  What will you now concoct in your over medicated haze?

NOTHING that I posted about Indo Guyanese was inaccurate, and it was done to tell the Indo KKK faction that Indians are NOT superior to blacks.

But then I guess you think that black people should remain unresponsive when provoked by KKK type taunts which occurred regularly then, and once again occurred.  AT least now you condemn those racists.  Pity you didn't then.

Now run off and take your medications. I am putting you on block.

I do not hear it was an impromptu act. It followed warnings to move and a timetable. Indeed there should be some social workers on the ground taking stock of who are on the pavement, the kind of business and opportunity given to relocate to other areas. Help in compensation should be offered to those who move ( not before)

In any event. I do not want to conflation other issues of corrupt practiced allowed to go free with this one where action was taken. Those not being addressed is a lacking and should be addressed as such. I still agree this matter should be non negotiable. They have to move.

As an example of a neglect] the Chinese company building the gas station with massive  petrol tanks without requisite permits or ownership structure should be seized. Worse, the fact that it was patrolled by guards with high powered ak17 weapons should not be permitted to happen. The Granger government should not wait for clarification but arrest the whole lot then wait for the fall out.

Thanks for making the point.

Now how will these vendors feel when PPP oligarchs remain unpunished, when they have seen their livelihood destroyed.

APNU wants to see a PPP mayor of G/town.  I am convinced of that.  They haven't even bothered to begin to introduce potential APNU candidates to the public, given obviously they cannot seriously plan to have Green run as the APNU candidate.

And there we have it.  The wealthy can have their private armies and face no sanctions despite what APNU/AFC screamed during the campaign.

Even you cite what APNU SHOULD HAVE DONE. In fact exactly what I said that they should have done. Well they did NOT do this.  They went like "Bruk it down" Robeson Benn.

Well "Bruk it down" Benn doesn't need their support when ever LGE happens. APNU does!

And why would the vendors take the "warnings" (with no alternate plan) seriously when the SAME stalls were used to promote APNU/AFC during the election, LEGITIMIZING the existence of these stalls.

Bad, when wealthy criminals walk the land unpunished, and are brazen about that fact, as all of the screams from Guyana Times brazenly indicate.

Get real fool. Indeed these are their supporters but it is not for these the rules exist but for all. They are not as nepotistic and silly as the past regime to not look to cleanliness, order and a better quality of life as the premium. These people may not grasp the plan but they will experience the benefits. They can be creative and make movable carts so they can take advantage of variation of traffic and be safe from weather and property loss especially if they can move their carts to secure places.

Does your Mama call you FOOL???

No, She realized the long hours of nurturing on her knees were fruitful.

Danny, KP is a troll.
