Five months after breaking away from the main opposition Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR), leader of the Guyana Youth Congress (GYC), Denton Osborne on Saturday announced that his newly formed party would be endorsing A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).
Osborne told Demerara Waves Online News ( www.demwaves.com ) that, while acknowledging that the PNCR is the dominant partner in the coalition, the major reason was forging unity.
He said the youths of the party, mainly from Region 10 opted to embrace APNU rather than the Alliance For Change (AFC).
“The PNC being the dominant partner has nothing to do with us endorsing APNU. The reason why we endorsed APNU we believed that in the spirit of unity they should all come together and work towards the common good of the country,” Osborne said.
He explained that the GYC leadership went to members who signed its nomination forms and asked whether they would rather contest the elections or join another party.
In a statement, Osborne said the decision was made after reading APNU’s Statement of Principles and Declaration and was convinced that the partnership’s promise of a government of national unity “represents the future of Guyana in which the interest of all Guyanese will be given full expression.”
“We pledge to work with and in the APNU to bring about the change which is so necessary in Guyana generally and more particularly the people of Region 10,” said Osborne in his statement.
Osborne in early July dumped the PNCR and had his eyes set on Region 10’s two parliamentary seats. While at that time he had avoided criticizing APNU presidential candidate, David Granger, his major grouse appeared to be lack of will by the PNCR and APNU to address the interests of young people.
