ACCORDING TO MINISTRY OF INFORMATION PRESS RELEASE, POLICE ON JULY 30 ARRESTED LEADER OF OPPOSITION PEOPLE'S PROGRESSIVE PARTY (PPP) CHEDDI JAGAN ON CHARGES OF UNLAWFUL POSSESSION OF AMMUNITION AND COMPONENT PARTS OF PISTOL. ARREST FOLLOWED EXTENSIVE SEARCH OF JAGAN'S HOME AND FREEDOM HOUSE, PPP HEADQUARTERS. REPORTEDLY ONE PISTOL MAGAINZE, 10 ROUNDS OF .32 CALIBER AND 3 ROUNDS OF .22 CALIBER AMMUNTION WERE FOUND. JAGAN WAS RELEASED ON BOND AND INSTRUCTED TO APPEAR IN GEORGETOWN MAGISTRATES COURT ON JULY 31. IN COMMENT IN PPP PAPER MIRROR, JANET JAGAN, PPP INTERNATIONAL SECRETARY, SAID THIS WAS FIRST TIME IN 20 YEARS POLICE HAVE SEARCHED JAGAN HOME AND FIRST TIME IN 10 YEARS POLICE HAVE SEARCHED FREEDOM HOUSE.

2. COMMENT: ARREST OF JAGAN CONFIRMS HIS SUSPICION THAT IN AFTERMATH OF TOLL GATE ATTACK (REFTEL), GOVT WOULD TIGHTEN CONTROL OVER PPP ACTIVITIES. GOVT HAS APPARENTLY DECIDED TO MAKE CLEAR SHOW OF FORCE IN RESPONSE TO ATTACK IN HOPES OF DETERRING FURTHER OPPOSITION VIOLENCE. TO KEEP THIS STRATEGY FROM BACKFIRING, GOVT MUST AVOID MAKING JAGAN INTO MARTYR, THEREBY STIRRING UP EAST INDIAN COMMUNITY WHICH STILL VIEWS HIM IN RACIAL TERMS AS THEIR LEADER.

JAGAN WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH THESE OFFENSES FOLLOWING EXTENSIVE SEARCH OF HIS HOME AND PPP HEADQUARTERS ON JULY 30 (REFTEL). Gilly attended one of those court hearings, presided by Magistrate Rudolph Harper. While his lawyers were presenting the defence, Dr Jagan sat cool and calm writing an article or something, consulting a book and some newspapers he had walked with. The charge was later dismissed.

The 1973 rigged elections emboldened Burnham and fashioned who he would be until he died in 1985. It was after this election that Burnham begun going mad.

I read Jessie Burnham's book "Beware my brother Forbes" A letter that he sent her as a student in London may have indicated that the man had some strong negative feelings about the East Indians of BG even then.

Indians are more likely to look at the mistakes of Cheddie Jagan and hold him responsible. I wish the same could be said about the Africans and their Champ. LFS.

Cheddi Jagan and his wife made the same mistake as Prabhakaran of the Tamil Tigers. They beat down other Indian politicians. The result was the opposition to the East Indians political enemies became narrow and just revolved mostly around them thereby making their political enemies better able to defeat them. It is important to learn from political failures so that they are never repeated.
