The compound of the Presidential Complex echoed with the sounds of Christmas carols when the Guyana Police Force’s Band gave their traditional performance as part of the season’s festivities. The band, which was ably conducted, gave a half -hour performance of several traditional and new Christmas songs and carols to an appreciative audience of mostly staffers who took some time from their busy schedules to enjoy the music.

The band members, whose performance was curtailed somewhat due to the inclement weather, were praised by President Donald Ramotar who joined his staff in the forecourt of the complex. The president said that he thoroughly enjoyed the band’s performance and expressed the hope that it could be further developed, “in terms of instruments, more variety etc”. He noted that with the great talent inherent in its members, other instruments such as the violin and cello could be incorporated into future performances.

The Police Force’s Choir was also praised by President Ramotar for their virtuoso performances over the year. “You have been doing a tremendous job, very often you have me at the edge of my seat because I want to come and join you.”  He also wished the members of the force a happy and prosperous 2015 and pledged government’s commitment to continue supporting their endeavours.

In closing he made mention of the social role that they could play as he cited the example set by Venezuela’s military forces and big band orchestras training youths and others to become musicians. This effort has seen a drop in crime in vulnerable communities. The president explained that this is another “soft side” of policing that can be used to help the children who are less privileged and give them some hope to move forward.

The president, an avid music lover and singer later tried his hand at conducting the band, much to the pleasure of his staffers and the band members who applauded his efforts.

Why am I reminded of Nero-the mad emperor of Rome. Ramotar comes to mind. Like he going nuts-singing, conducting a band, running around kissing up everybody.

Like this fella suddenly realized how powerful he is.

You mean like Nero playing the violin whilst Rome burned down?

In this case Ramotar is playing with his balls whilst Guyana floods.
