Acid, missiles reportedly thrown at PPP/C supporters –President says party will not be intimidated

AN UNPROVOKED attack on supporters of the ruling party last evening was vehemently condemned by President Donald Ramotar. “This is terrible. It is horrible and probably intended to drive fear into our supporters, but I am sure it will work in the opposite manner and our supporters will support us even stronger,” he said in an invited comment, last night.
Reports are that supporters who attended the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) Rally at Albion, Region 6, were attacked in the vicinity of Number 51 Village, on their way home.
Information reaching the Guyana Chronicle, late last night, indicated that acid and missiles were heaved at the supporters. However, up to press time, the number of persons injured was not confirmed.
According to the PPP/C presidential candidate, elections ought to be free and fair, as well as free from intimidation.
Mr Ramotar called on the political Opposition to join in his call for all Guyanese to exercise respect for each other’s choice of leadership ahead of the May 11 General and Regional elections.
“We have to vehemently put an end to this,” he stressed.
Up to late last evening, Guyana Police Force officials indicated that no incident has yet been reported at Number 51 police station, which is the police station within the district of the incident.

Three PPP supporters injured after Albion rally; police appeal for tolerance

The Guyana Police Force Monday afternoon confirmed that several persons were injured when unidentified persons hurled missiles at a vehicle that was transporting persons from the People's Progressive Party Civic's (PPPC) rally at Albion.

"Two women were struck to their head and shoulder, respectively, and a female child was struck to her left hand," police said.

Demerara Waves Online News was told by a high-ranking officer in the Berbice Division that, contrary to a report in a section of the state media, no one was the victim of an acid attack. A medical doctor at a health care institution that treated the child said there was no evidence of burns by a corrosive substance, said the police source.

Investigations so far revealed that about 7:30 Sunday night (April 19, 2015), objects were allegedly thrown into a motor vehicle transporting supporters of the PPP/C political party in the vicinity of No. 50 Village, Corentyne.

The Guyana Police Force appealed to Guyanese to be tolerant during the electioneering period."The Guyana Police Force is taking this opportunity to call on members of the public to be tolerant of the political activities that are taking place at this time and which are part of our democratic process; and is urging citizens to refrain from interfering with persons who may be of other political persuasions."

The PPPC last week accused A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+ AFC) coalition of harassing attendees at meetings of the incumbent party and the destruction of party paraphernalia such as banners and bill-boards.

Frankly, that attack was uncalled for.

Those unidentified persons who hurled missiles at PPP people were acting contrary to APNU+AFC directives. The coalition has been cautioning its supporters not to respond to provocation, to stay calm and vote peacefully on May 11.

Acid or no acid, those few recalcitrants embarrassed APNU+AFC.

Children injured after PPP weekend Rally; Rohee cites “Opposition desperation”

April 20, 2015 12:30 pm Category: Politics A+ /

[www.inewsguyana.com] General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Clement Rohee said two children, a boy and girl ages 14 and 13, were injured on Sunday evening (April 19) on their way home from the rally at Albion.

According to Rohee, he received reports stating that between Number 50 and 51 villages on the Corentyne, Berbice a truck transporting supporters from the rally was attacked and persons injured.

Rohee said a bottle with a corrosive substance was thrown into the vehicle, causing burns to the body of a 13 – year – old girl. In addition, he said a 14 – year – old boy was hit by a missile in the head, while a 32 – year – old woman was hit to the shoulder.

The General Secretary said he did not have the names of those injured, neither the hospital at which he said they were treated and sent home from. What he could say was that the police are investigating the matter.

Rohee stressed that this is a matter of criminal offence, while noting that he is unaware of the same type of behaviour being meted out to Opposition supporters passing through any village. .

He then questioned whether such behaviour was centrally or locally orchestrated. Rohee also proffered that these types of behaviour is a “manifestation of the desperation and the frantic response by the Opposition to the massive turnout at rallies of the PPP”.

He added that what the PPP has to ensure is that “there is no retaliation”.

Meanwhile, in a subsequent release, the Guyana Police Force said it is conducting investigations into reports that at about 19:30hrs Sunday April 19, 2015, objects were allegedly thrown into a motor vehicle transporting supporters of the PPP/C political party in the vicinity of No. 50 Village, Corentyne.

Police say “two women were struck to their head and shoulder, respectively, and a female child was struck to her left hand. They were treated at the Skeldon Hospital.”

Rotee saying acid was thrown, then the police say
