Relative to the investigation into the grenade attack at Kaieteur News on Saturday, detectives from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) after reviewing surveillance footage have detained a motor car matching the description and six suspects, the GPF said in a press release today.
The suspects were arrested in the wee hours of today at different locations and are in custody assisting with investigations.

Six persons were early Tuesday morning arrested in connection with the presence of a live grenade near the vehicle owned and driven by the publisher of Kaieteur News, Glenn Lall.
“Relative to the investigation into the grenade attack at Kaieteur News, detectives from the Guyana Police Force after reviewing surveillance footage have detained a motor car matching the description and six suspects,” the Guyana Police Force said in a statement.
Ballistic experts said the pin was detached from the live fragmentation grenade, but the most likely reason that it did not explode was because it malfunctioned due to poor storage.
Commander for ‘A’ Division, Assistant Commissioner, Clifton Hicken said the suspects were arrested at several locations in Sophia, South Georgetown and its environs.
Hicken explained that the driver of a car , which was found abandoned shortly after the grenade was seen near the vehicle Saturday night, admitted that the car was not hijacked but was loaned to a friend. The police officer said the owner of the car has named the person to whom the car was loaned.
The Commander expressed his sincere thanks to members of the public who have been assisting with the probe. “We want to thank the public for coming on board to share information to bring closure to this incident. We are optimistic that we will bring closure,” he told Demerara Waves Online News.
The grenade was found late Saturday night near Lall’s vehicle while several Kaieteur News staffers were nearby attending a wake for Dale Andrews who died hours earlier.

My vehicle was parked directly opposite Mr. Lall’s on Saffon Street. Lall’s vehicle was on the western side of the street, mine on the eastern side
I left the Dale Andrews’s wake at 8.45 pm. My skin grows when I imagine what would have happened if that grenade had exploded. A fragmentation grenade kills because it buries deep in your physiology, deadly fragments. They pierce your brain, heart. lungs etc. There were dozens of persons at that wake. Sadly this is what Guyana has come to. Since the grenade was thrown on Saturday night, the questions are increasing – who do you think is the source or where do you locate it?
Let me digress to Priya Manickchand. A KN staffer showed me Manickchand’s response to a column I did on her a few days ago. The article exposed her double standards when she was part of the Jagdeo Cabinet. She posted on her Facebook page an image of the long lines outside the passport office last week. I responded by saying the lines were equally long when she was Minister of Social Services and subsequently Minister of Education. I mentioned the time when she called Glenn Lall to object to a column of mine about suffering parents outside her Ministry waiting for school placement.
She called Lall on the phone and Adam Harris joined the conversation. She was annoyed and asked Glenn to demand the evidence from me. In her Facebook page last week, she denied she ever did that. I am calling her a liar. She can sue if she wants to. After she spoke to Lall, I contacted her by phone to assert the position I took in my column. This was July 2012. Manickchand in that 2012 telephonic exchange accused me of wanting to remove the PPP. I replied in the affirmative telling Manickchand that the PPP Government made two attempts on my life.
You know what was Manickchand’s reply? I write on so many people so one will not know who were behind my assaults.
As it turned out, in the first assault in 2010, a confessor implicated PPP officials including Jason Abdulla and Kwame McCoy who have since been charged for the offence. In the second attack, in 2012, my assailant escaped in a black SUV registered to a close PPP security official who was a former police officer. That person was in charge of PPP security arrangements for the 2015 General Elections. From the cloistered rooms of the PPP head office, the Manickchand explanation will be offered as the reason for the grenade attack. Not one single Guyanese will believe it.
My inflexible position is that the actors still reeling from the loss of power, the perpetrators of financial accumulations during the reign of oligarchy, are behind the grenade incident. From the time Mrs. Jagan handed over the presidency to Bharrat Jagdeo in August 1999, the nature of the State deteriorated badly.
The exercise of power was based on raw power. By the time Ramotar was dethroned in the May 2015 General Elections, violently sadistic men with a morbid willingness to use extreme violence had taken over the state machinery.
By “taken over,” I mean they were so clothed in silicone immunity that they felt unrestrained to do whatever they wanted. The Jagdeo/Ramotar cabal had spawned an era of naked power where subordinated members in the corridors of power took orders to kill people and when there weren’t orders, they killed on their own.
Tragically, Courtney Crum Ewing was a victim of this orgy of Hitlerite descent into mindless violence.
Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water, a grenade comes from nowhere and ignites the bloodthirsty pangs of Jaws. On Sunday evening I went into Mr. Lall’s office and solicited an honest opinion from him about going back into the water. That was a metaphorical way of asking if I should continue to go home after 10.30 PM which was a self-imposed restriction prior to 2015 because of my fear of killers in the night.
Lall said that one must not let these people believe they can intimidate the Kaieteur News. He’s right but one must always be on guard every second of the day. The loss of power has brought the loss of mind. The loss of mind has brought the loss of reason. Men without reason have fled to brutish beasts.

Seven years have passed, and some families of the slained Kaieteur News pressmen seem to be holding their grounds and moving on. But, this is not the case of Julius De Grace, one of the two survivors of the attack.
It is not the case where he just did not recuperate, his wife said, noting that her husband’s mental state has deteriorated.
Ever since the fateful night of August 8, 2006, the woman explained that De Grace who was once a fearless man has become scared to the extent where even sleeping has become a task.
Her words came as no shock to me, because as I spoke to Mr. De Grace, he was literally shaking like a leave. He seemed very fragile.
The now 74-year-old man was the only security personnel on duty that night, and the first to be shot in the head by one of the fully armed youths who wasted no time in scouring the premises for those who were inside, executing five of the six pressmen who were hiding in the toilet.
“Right now, I don’t remember anything. You underrate the shock I been through? I still feel stupid to this day. Only people who been through it can understand young lady, you wouldn’t. That thing ruined my whole life,” De Grace said.
He added that ever since the killings, he has not been able to work any longer. And out of fear that tragedy might once again strike in his path, De Grace said that he does not leave his home very often.
The man even pleaded that I not accompany this article with his photograph, as he heard that the accused were released, and are currently roaming free.
Meanwhile, Ramchand Harripersaud also known as “Harry”, the only surviving pressman has been able move on to some degree. Although the events of that night would still make tears fall, he has commenced working to provide for his family. “Harry” is currently employed in the printery of another newspaper.
Recalling that night, the he said that just minutes after he and his colleagues reported for work at around 22:00hrs, the sound of gunshots filled the air.

United Kingdom (UK) High Commissioner, Greg Quinn, has joined the Government of Guyana and the Guyana Press Association (GPA) to condemn the recent act of terror perpetuated against Kaieteur News.

It was Benjamin Franklin who said, “Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.”
Quinn’s statement against the attack on Kaieteur News is a stark reminder of Franklin’s mantra. The High Commissioner urged that all stand united against any form of attack against press freedom.
On Saturday evening, as staffers and friends of Kaieteur News congregated for the wake of fallen senior crime reporter and assistant editor, Dale Andrews, someone threw a grenade that landed near the vehicle of Kaieteur News Publisher Glenn Lall.
It was a live fragmentation grenade. Experts are saying that it can only be “a miracle that the device did not explode.”
The Government and the GPA have since condemned the act.
Quinn is the first envoy to publicly condemn the attack on Kaieteur News.
He said, “Freedom of the press is sacrosanct. There is no room in a modern Guyana for attacks such as that on KN over the weekend.”
Quinn said that it is of utmost importance that “all condemn this and all other attacks on those whose jobs it is to act as the spotlight of society.”
Kaieteur News has been targeted before. It has been firebombed, five pressmen were gunned down and a serving Minister of the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) had threatened the lives of staffers.

PPP para militias invaded KN and shot and killed some people. None other than the PPP AG threatened to kill Glen Lall. Other KN staff were also threatened with violence or had fecal matter thrown on them.
You have no proof that the PNC was involved as they have never issued the pubic utterances of violence against KN as the PPP has done.

Just to show what a fraud you are, even coalition members are free to say their piece, and that includes even interviews with Guyana Times.
Note what Freddie K had to say. During the Jagdeo era he was threatened many times, as he outlines, and they even tried to harass his daughter.
These PPP stooges and murderers have no shame. Imagine coming here and denying anyone was murdered by the PPP when the bodies were there for all to see. Sawh, Cummings, and hundreds more were slain by the PPP. I am surprised that the current government is dragging its heels with bringing these PPP criminals to court.
G L and FK should apologize to the East Indian people of Guyana for supporting these people .
