Police hunt bandits who robbed clerk of sales money
Two armed bandits using a CG motorcycle around 13:50 hrs on Monday afternoon intercepted and held up a clerk from the popular A. Ally and Sons General Store in New Amsterdam before escaping.
The clerk, in company with a Manager of the store had travelled to the store’s headquarters at Main and Cooper’s Lane to the Republic Bank Branch in New Amsterdam with an undisclosed sum of money in a bag to make a deposit.
Reports are that she had just stepped out of the vehicle and was about to enter the bank compound, a man dressed in a hood suddenly approached her and grabbed the bag. The young woman held on to the bag and began screaming during which time the bandit fired a shot in the air, he then pointed the gun at the clerk and was about to shoot again when her boss instructed her to release the bag which contained both cash and cheques.
His colleague, who was reportedly dressed in a red, white and gold hat, was waiting on a black CG motor cycle which was parked with the engine running a corner away (Lad Lane). The bandit with the bag sprinted away and joined his colleague on the bike and they sped away, even as the owner’s vehicle turned around and gave chase.
The high speed chase went as far as the entrance of Angoy’s Avenue where the men were able to escape using a narrow bridge which led to the sprawling squatting community. The owner’s vehicle turned around and continued to give chase but the bandits were long gone.
The police were contacted and responded and joined in the hunt, but up to press time no one had been arrested.
Investigators and the owners are hoping that footage from the Bank and a nearby store could assist investigators in tracking down the bandits. The popular business entity has branches at New Amsterdam, Canje, Corriverton and Grove East Bank Demerara. The business also has an Auto Sales Department.
