Officer fingered in plot to cover up killing of teen by father under close arrest – Crime Chief

The police officer who allegedly accepted a bribe to assist the Better Hope, East Coast Demerara family to cover up the murder of 18-year-old Azeez Khan is under close arrest while investigations are ongoing.
Dead: 18-year-old Azeez Khan

However, if evidence is found to support the claim that he attempted to pervert the course of justice, he will face the necessary charges.

This is according to Senior Superintendent and Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum during an interview with Inews on Thursday.

“He is under close arrest. The investigation is still ongoing and we don’t want to prejudice the investigation but if there is evidence that he indeed told the guy what to say to the police and so forth, he can be charged for attempting to pervert the procedures,” Blanhum explained.

On May 4 2017, an unconscious Azeez Khan was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was allegedly hit in the head with a piece of wood by his father during an argument at their home in Better Hope.

Inews understands that the argument ensued after Khan reportedly hit his sister behind her head for leaving the home wearing unsavory clothing. His father became angry and the two started arguing, which led to the altercation.

Khan died one day after he was admitted to the hospital.

This online publication was informed that the family of Khan allegedly approached a police officer and offered him $500,000 to provide them with a suitable alibi. As such, using advice allegedly given by the rank, the family of the now dead teen initially posited that Khan died after falling off of a ladder at work.

However, the post mortem examination conducted on Monday revealed that the teen actually died of hemorrhaging and blunt force trauma to the head.

Shortly after the post mortem report, Khan’s parents were taken in for questioning where  the now dead teen’s father, Omar Khan, a 40-year-old security guard reportedly confessed to killing his child.

The senior Khan was, on Thursday morning, charged for murder and remanded to prison. (Ramona Luthi)
