Police Outpost commissioned at Amelia’s Ward

Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee on Friday commissioned a police outpost at Amelia’s Ward, Linden, which stands testimony to a successful partnership between Government and the private sector. The new edifice came into being as a result of the unwavering efforts of members of the vibrant Linden Station Management Committee, who saw the need for such a facility to augment the work of the existing police stations in E and F Division.
Minister Rohee said that the significance of a facility such as the one at Amelia’s Ward lies in the absence of one, and expressed satisfaction over the fact that the idea for its construction came directly from people within the community. He said that the outpost means a permanent presence of the police which in turn will lead to greater security and a stronger sense of psychological comfort.
The 2011 budget for the security sector provides for the construction of six more such facilities in strategic locations including; St. Cuthbert’s Mission, Aranka, North Ruimveldt, Hogg Island, Abary, and Crabwood Creek. Construction of some of these facilities is nearing completion; while contracts have already been awarded for others.
Minister Rohee disclosed that the 2012 budget which is currently being prepared will also make provisions for additional outposts, however; its main focus will be on enhancing the state of police lockups across the country. The Minister also used forum to respond to an age old debate that was recently rekindled with regards to delinking E and F Division, making it two separate divisions to be headed by two different commanders. He said that consultations with the Guyana Police Force (GPF) have shown that such a step is not necessary.
“This E and F model brought fairly good results, greater cohesion and cooperation in terms of intelligence gathering, and better use of limited resources,” the Home Affairs Minister said. Police Commissioner, Henry Greene said that a lot of robberies and other illegal activities have reduced significantly in Linden and this facility will help to further improve the situation as it relates to security. He said too that the role of the GPF is not strictly to enforce the laws but also to work closely with communities, particular the youths, so as to ensure a safer and more productive future for all.
“We will put our best foot forward to offer service and protection, that is our goal in the Force,” Greene said. Kathy Richards, a member of the Linden Station Management Committee, expressed gratitude to the business community and individuals who contributed to the realisation of the facility. Special mention was made of OMAI and BOSAI, two prominent industries that together, contributed more than $1.5M that was expended on landscaping of the site. The outpost became operational on August 14 and has since been providing services to the community. Thus far, it has already received 40 reports, resulting in several persons being prosecuted and convicted.
