FILE PHOTO: Deputy Police Commissioner, Seelall Persaud and Director of Public Prosecutions, Shalimar Hack Deputy Police Commissioner,
Seelall Persaud on Monday said lawmen were continuing to target criminals in Sophia and North Ruimveldt where there has been an upsurge in gun-related robberies.
The latest reported victim was 19-year old Romario Weithers who was shot to his abdomen and robbed while going to his ‘C’ Field, Sophia home about 8 O’clock, Sunday
night. The bandit took away a gold ring and cellular phone from Weithers before escaping.
When Weithers arrived at his residence, he told his mother that he was shot and she rushed him to the hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.
No one has been arrested.
Among the steps being taken to suppress criminal activity in Sophia, Persaud said, was the establishment of a road block on Dennis Street. He said there has been an increase in mobile patrols and intelligence-led operations to seize guns and apprehend criminals.
The Deputy Police Commissioner noted that the area is big and a lot of the robberies are opportunistic because perpetrators take advantage of the darkness of the area
