Donald Ramotar

The three main political parties contending in the 2011 General and Regional Elections will take the last lap in the campaign when they host their final rallies today ahead of polling day on Monday. Today’s rallies could easily be dubbed the daddies of all rallies, as they will represent the last chances the parties have to convince the populace to vote in their favour.

The incumbent People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) will stage its rally at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, from 15:00hrs with a Unity Concert featuring Soca Queen Destra and Trinidadian Chutney Sensation KI, local Chutney Singer Fiona, and others.

Presidential Candidate, Donald Ramotar, his running mate and long serving Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, as well as President Bharrat Jagdeo are among those slated to speak at the eventful programme.

Guided by its fundamental principles of equality, integrity, national unity and democracy, the PPP/C Government aims to achieve a modern Guyana, where rights and freedoms are enhanced, where individual and national wellbeing are secure, a nation that is united in spirit and in purpose, and a nation whose long-heralded potential is fulfilled.

This, the party says, builds on the foundation laid during its previous terms in office.

“Ours will be a Guyana that is a preferred place to live and work, where the individual and the family feel safe and protected, and where the quality of social services enjoyed by our citizens is comparable to the best in the world. This Guyana will be a land of opportunity and prosperity, where every citizen can aspire to realise his own Guyanese dream defined by his individual preferences and priorities,” the PPP/C manifesto outlines.

It is also this party’s intent to build a Guyana where the world’s most modern technology is available and accessible by all citizens, where connectivity with the rest of the world is assured and affordable, where tens of thousands of world-class jobs are created and filled by Guyanese harnessing this technology, and where, aided by technology, the barriers of geographical distance from our traditional trading partners and the vulnerabilities that arise from our smallness will be overcome.

The PPP/C boasts of having restored the local economy to one that is admired by many CARICOM nations, one that has been able to withstand the pressures associated with the global economic crisis.

This is a major area of focus, one that a Ramotar-led government plans to advance further.

David Granger

On the other hand, the Opposition coalition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has its final rally at the Square of the Revolution with “Gospel Explosion” starting at 16:00hrs. This concert will feature local gospel Artistes such as Cheryl Maloney, Kester ‘D’, Sean English, and Trenacia Esseboom, among others.

The party’s Presidential and Prime Ministerial Candidates, David Granger and Dr Rupert Roopnaraine, are among those slated to address the crowd in APNU’s last major campaigning activity. Long-time PNC/R Supporter Lurlene Nestor and Youth Advocate Ganesh Mahipaul will also speak this evening.

APNU is made up of political parties such as the Peoples National Congress Reform (PNC/R), the Working Peoples Alliance (WPA), Justice For All Party (JFAP), interest groups, civic organisations and individuals, but is contesting the 2011 General and Regional Elections as a single List of Candidates. A.P.N.U’s goal is to form a Government of national unity and to ensure Guyana’s plural society succeeds through respect for the diversity, hard work, thrift and sacrifice of all citizens.

The group also promises to ensure that all Guyanese, regardless of class, creed, race, gender or geographic location, “enjoy a good life,” if elected.

“This will be achieved through the creation of an environment in which all citizens recognise the important role they play in building our country in which they can live productive lives---free from the ravages of poverty, secure in their homes and communities, and enjoy the benefits of political, social, economic and cultural development and freedom,” APNU’s manifesto was launched less than a week ago.Titled “A Good Life for All Guyanese”,the manifesto features 12 key areas ranging from the Economy, Human Development and Social Empowerment, to Information and Communication Technology, Governance and the Environment.

Khemraj Ramjattan

Meanwhile, minority opposition party, the Alliance For Change (AFC), has its final rally planned for the Parade Ground, from 15:00hrs today. Those set to address the gathering are Presidential Candidate Khemraj Ramjattan, and his running mates, Moses Nagamootoo and Raphael Trotman, among others. There will also be special tributes to founding member Sheila Holder, who died less than a week ago.

This party, contesting national elections for the second time, thrives on embracing and celebrating Guyana’s ethnic diversity. Other goals of the AFC are to defend and increase civil liberties of citizens, and to regulate government’s intervention in political, economic and social issues affecting the people.

Like APNU, the AFC wants to ensure that every citizen has equitable access to the resources of the state and the national decision-making processes in keeping with the constitution.

It has an ambitious target of making 28 changes within its first year in office, including the reduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT) to 12 %, as well as lowering other taxes which ultimately will result in greater spending power for citizens.

Within the first month of entering government, this party wants to re-engage the offer from the UK to reform the police force and allow the USA’s Drug Enforcement Agency to set up an operation in Guyana.

Guyana goes to the poll on Monday November 28, 2011, to elect a government that will run the country over the next five years, and the Elections Commission has declared that all systems are at go.

Every party deserves some response:

1. APNU: Oh me gosh, me feel sarry fuh APNU. Granger really had to take Roopnaraine. He had no where to go. Owh me gosh... Credit must be given though for Granger's attempt to form an alliance. They are trying, they are trying... But they are vicious. Wolf in Sheep's clothing...

2. AFC: Notice wah going on hey: Whose name is right after Ramjattan? Not Trotman? Isn't he the running mate anymore? This is no slip of the mind. They just want to fool the people.

"Presidential Candidate Khemraj Ramjattan, and his running mates, Moses Nagamootoo and Raphael Trotman, among others."

Neva mind. Credit must be given for Trotman bolding leaving the PNC to form the Alliance. People should not forget that. But remember, he supported the PNC's diabolic ways for many years. He was silent on the catastrophic display/actions of the PNC.

3. PPP/C: Well, wah me gun say. Yuh already know that no one can beat 'greatness'.

Great Nations are built by great leaders who have a vision for moving the country forward; the ones who can think strategically, with the nation close to their hearts; those who have endured the struggle to rise about adversities.

Final words:
All in all, hats off to all those who genuinely care, not those seeking POWER or REVENGE.

This is the party that Guyanese will trust.
