The majority of iNews readers believe that local government elections should be held immediately in Guyana.
Readers voted throughout the week to the poll question, “Given the state of local government bodies such as the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown, should local government elections be held immediately?”
In response, 88 percent voted ‘yes’, 11 percent were not in favour and one percent undecided.
Since the appointment of Carol Sooba as Town Clerk of the Mayor and City Council, there has been much turmoil within the Council, especially between Mayor Hamilton Green and Sooba.
The last local government elections were held approximately nineteen years ago. The four local government Bills were passed in the National Assembly on August 7, 2013.
