The Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) on Sunday last once again successfully completed another volleyball tournament with the playing off of the Three Door Strikes one day Volleyball extravaganza which was played under lights at the Three Doors Court at D’Edward, West Bank, Berbice.

The day began with prayer and blessing by the executives.
Present was President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) John Flores who was welcomed by President of The Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) Levi Nedd and all those in attendance. Nedd also applauded Three Doors Strikers for the initiative of having flood lights at the venue. Flores for his part congratulated Three Doors Strikers on the initiative and congratulated the BVA for the wonderful work being done.

A total of 13 teams participated in the day’s competition which saw three different categories played – males, female and juniors.

Among the males teams that competed were Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC), Port Mourant Jaguars, Guysuco Training Centre/ Port Mourant, Rollers Volleyball Club of New Amsterdam and host Three Doors Strikers.

Top team Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC) although not considered to represent Guyana at the recently held Border Games in neighbouring Boa Vista Brazil continue to dominate the game on these shores with a comfortable 2-0 defeated host Three Door Strikes (25-15, 25-20). For the win PMTC walked away with a trophy and $20,000. Second place Three doors Strikers copped $10,000 and trophy.

Port Mourant Jaguars held strong against GTC/PM to cop third place with a 30-25 win and take home the $3,000 and trophy.

The female competition which saw three teams participating was keenly contested among the evenly matched combinations. The final was a cliff hanger and went all the way down to the wire with Corriverton Jets coming from behind to eke out a hard fought win against Port Mourant the scores being 15-9, 18-16, 15-13. They took home a trophy and $7,000. The Port Mourant girls collected a trophy for placing second. The other team in the competition was Rollers.

The junior male category saw five teams taking part which is a good sign for the development and sustainability of the game. The teams were teams – Three Doors Strikers, GTC/PM, Black Bush Gemeni, Corriverton Jets and Rollers Volleyball Club.

This competition was played on a round robin basis with Rollers coming out winners ahead of

Three Doors Strikers. Both teams received trophies for the good showing.

At the end of the competition both GTC/PM and Three Door Strikes were selected to represent Berbice in the Tradewind Tankers Volleyball Competition to be played shortly. (Samuel Whyte)
