FLASH BACK: Mr. Ganga Persaud taking the oath of office as Minister of Local Government and Regional Development following the November 2011 general election

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Ganga Persaud on Thursday announced his resignation from the post, citing personal reasons.

"My resignation as Minister of local Government and Regional Development is based on personal issues presently engaging my attention as well as some additional responsibilities to which I am committed," he said in a prepared statement.

Persaud confirmed issuing the following statement and told Demerara Waves Online News that he was considering a number of options in and out of the government.

This is the first resignation to have hit the Donald Ramotar-led administration since the 2011 General and Regional Election.

I Ganga Persaud do hereby wish to announce my resignation as Minister of Local Government & Regional Development with effect of January 31^st 2014.

It was a distinct pleasure for me to have served as a Member of the Cabinet. I am extremely grateful to His Excellency, Mr. Donald Ramotar for the confidence he placed in me and I wish to declare my fullest support to him and his Government. I pledge to do all that I can to support the PPP/C Government in everything that it is doing to bring greater, happiness and comfort to all of us as Guyanese.

I wish to reiterate my full confidence in His Excellency, Mr. Donald Ramotar’s ability to lead our country to greater heights and bring more opportunities for success to all Guyana. His Excellency’s leadership styles are admired by many and I am always amazed at the ease with which he deals with issues, particularly delicate and sensitive issues.

As Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, the Ministry would have made significant achievements during my tenure, some of which are:

$11.       Strengthening of our Local Government Department, Centrally and Regionally.

$12.       Establishment of a Local Government Department to provide support to the NDCs and Municipalities

$13.       Enhance our relationships with communities across Guyana, through our constant Outreach Programmes and visit to villages

$14.       Significant movement in the direction of ITC to enhance our communication network.

I am extremely proud that together we, were at most times, worked as a team to achieve all that have made us proud. I wish to thank my colleague Minister the Hon. Norman Whittaker, PS Colin Croal, PA Chitra Singh, Confidential Secretary Geetanjali Curicca, Chauffeur Vedesh Lall and staff of my Ministry , as well as all in the RDCs, NDCs, Municipalities and CDCs for the support given to me and urged that they continue to work as a team for the good of all Guyanese.

As a member of the leadership of our Party, I wish to re – state my commitment to working with the PPP in enhancing our chances at the next General and Regional Elections so as to reclaim the majority in the Parliament. This is so important for Guyana’s continued Growth and Development since no other political party can assure our country’s development other than the PPP.

My resignation as Minister of local Government and Regional Development is based on personal issues presently engaging my attention as well as some additional responsibilities to which I am committed.

Local govt. Minister Ganga Persaud resigns

Minister Persaud says he will demit office at the end of the month; he did show up for today’s sitting of the National Assembly. Minister Persaud was recently embroiled in two embarrassing situations; one the bizzare construction of the new multi-million dollar Moruca Bridge, which has residents using a catwalk attached to the new bridge. The second scandal involving Persaud was a Memorandum of Understanding he agreed to without doing enough due diligence, the government later admitted. Persaud had sealed a US$30 million contract for a recycling plant with what was found to be a non-existing company. The government was forced to withdraw the Memorandum of Understanding.

Minister Persaud said that his resignation has to do with personal issues engaging his attention as well as some additional responsibilities to which he is committed.

Ganga Persaud to feel the wrath of Opposition for alleged sexual involvement with minor

[www.inewsguyana.com] - Opposition Chief Whip Amna Ali has warned that the wrath of the Opposition will be unleashed on Local Government Minister Ganga Persaud following revelations of his alleged involvement with a minor.

According to Ali, it is downright unbecoming as a Minister and more so a Member of Parliament (MP).

“I would have thought that Minister Ganga Persaud would have had his wife… honestly what I want to say on this matter I can’t say,” Ali told iNews.

The APNU MP believes that he should not have only resigned as a Government Minister but also remove himself from the National Assembly.

“All Members of Parliament should emulate decency there is no excuse for failing to do so,” Ali said.

She said that at the appropriate time the Opposition will deal with these allegations appropriately, if proven to be true.

Ganga Persaud shocked the nation when he announced his resignation on January 23. The resignation was accepted by President Donald Ramotar and becomes effective on January 31.

Though he maintained that he resigned because of personal issues and as a result of added obligations, allegations have surfaced which claimed that he was asked to resign by President Donald Ramotar following the damning revelations.

General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Clement Rohee dodged questions of this ilk during a press conference on Monday, January 26.

When asked if the PPP is concerned with these reports, Rohee was hesitant to answer.

He said to one reporter, “You’re treading on very sensitive grounds; you’re treading on extremely sensitive grounds that could have far reaching implications.”

When asked if the PPP is concerned about the reports implicating Persaud, Rohee said, “We are concerned in respect of all government ministers committing acts of indiscretion, committing acts of impropriety, committing acts of dishonesty, committing acts of corruption while carrying out their ministerial responsibilities. That has been a long established concern ever since we took office in 1992.”

Persaud remains a government Parliamentarian and a member of the PPP and its central committee.
