PPP Congress opens today
The Peopleβs Progressive Party (PPP) will today open its 31st Congress, at CottonField Secondary School,Essequibo Coast, Reg(PomeroonSupenaam).
This congress opens at a critical time for the party as it is the first congress since the party lost the General and Regional Elections in May 2015. At the event, the Party is expected to elect a new 32-member Central Committee. Among the top runners for governance of the Party are Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo, Irfaan Ali, PPP Chief Whip Gail Teixeira, Frank Anthony and Anil Nandall. This congress comes at a critical juncture for the 66-year-old Party as a number of new youthful faces are expected to be elected to the frontline.
Essential to note is the fact that the frontrunners elected at this congress will be an indicator as to the direction the Party is heading towards for its presidential candidate in 2020. Critical discussions are expected on topical issues affecting the country, along with in-depth analysis of the results of the 2015 elections. Guyana Times understands that a number of delegates arrived from the Diaspora in the United States and Canada for this historic event. Among those who will be attending the opening ceremony today are members of the diplomatic community and the Private Sector.
