PPP, opp agree on distribution of standing committees

KARACHI: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), the ruling party in Sindh, along with opposition parties agreed on the distribution formula of 35 standing committees among each other on Monday.

It was decided during a joint meeting of parties at Sindh Assembly building.

Provincial Law Minister Dr Sikandar Mandhro presided over the meeting, and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) members represented by Syed Sardar Ahmed were also present.

According to the agreed formula, the PPP will avail offices of chairpersons of some 19 standing committees; the MQM will get 10 leading positions; Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) members will head three committees; PML-Nawaz two; whereas the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will get the chairmanship of one standing committee.

The issue of one of the most important committees of the house ( the Public Accounts Committee ( however stands disputed, and will be discussed later. Dr Sikandar Mandhro told Daily Times that leader of the house, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, along with the Opposition Leader Faisal Sabzwari shall decide after holding consultations.

Meanwhile, the MQM has started preparations to submit amendments for the local government system Sindh Assembly had passed last month. Parliamentary leader of the party, Syed Sardar Ahmed said that a final decision for submitting the amendments would be taken on Thursday.

As per official sources, a new session of the assembly will be convened to consider the amendments, soon.
