General Secretary of the PPP, Clement Rohee:

[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Opposition People’s Progressive Partyon Monday called on the government to commence work in the direction of having a law school established in Guyana.

The PPP’s urging comes one week after Attorney General Basil Williams said it was quite a costly venture which the new Administration cannot now bear.

Rohee said former AG Anil Nandlall had commenced discussions at the level of Cabinet and with the Council of Legal Education in this regard and called on the government to build ont that.

He is not buying the APNU+AFC administration’s argument that it cannot be afforded at this time.

He said if the government can find money to carry out several audits and inquiries along with giving its Ministers pay hikes, then it can very well find the money for a law school.

Rohee accused Williams of “flip flopping” on the issue and said it was President David  Granger who had promised to commence work as soon as possible in this direction.

The Attorney General believes that while it is a costly venture it can be birthed from either a public/private or fully private partnership.

“If we had a private/public law school venture…it would be easier for students to study here, as we have access to good clean healthy foods, a major component of the cost…,” Minister Williams explained.

Every year 25 Guyanese law students are automatically given entry to the Hugh Wooding Law School.
