PPP slams Government for voting against tax declaration motion

Criticisms continue to be levied against Government over its decision to vote against a motion calling on all parliamentarians to publicly declare their income tax returns and available assets over the last 10 years.

People’s Progressive Party General Secretary Clement Rohee joined others of civil society who have already chastised the government for obdurately refusing to implement mechanisms for all Members of Parliaments to put under public scrutiny their assets and taxes.

During a press conference Monday, the Party’s General Secretary lambasted government over its “slew of bad governance measures” with the most recent being the nonsupport of the PPP-sponsored motion.

“The APNU/AFC’s vote in favour of bad governance is another manifestation of the politics of deception practiced by the Granger administration to fool the populace into believing that they have “clean hands” when in fact what we hear is the voice of Jacob but feel the hands of Esau,” Rohee stated.

Previously, civil society groups and political commentators denounced Government’s decision, noting that the rejection goes against the very base of its campaign which was to promote transparency and accountability; and it also weakens their allegations of corruption against the former administration.

Transparency Institute of Guyana President Reverend Compton Meerabux, Vice President and prominent lawyer and accountant Christopher Ram, former Minister and political commentator Dr Henry Jeffrey were among those who criticised Government for its decision.

On Thursday last, the PPP/C presented the motion for debate in the National Assembly, underlining that an endorsement would mean that all parliamentarians were agreeing to implement greater levels of transparency and accountability; and that every “no vote” would mean that individual has something to hide.

The Government MPs, in essence, contended that the motion is a “massive political diversion” from “what is really necessary” to unearth corruption and consequently shot the request down.
