The ruling  People’s Progressive Party in a statement issued on Monday said it welcomes the announcement by the United States government to soon establish a Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Office in Guyana. The party said it was a fulfillment of a promise made  more than a decade ago.

It said it was heartened by the fact that the idea received the support of the US Congress and that it belives the establishment of this office will complement ongoing efforts of the government to tackle the illicit drug trade. It also believes it will result in more coordinated action between Guyana and the United States, as well as the rest of the Caribbean and South America in the fight against drugs.

The party maintained that it has been in the forefront of the calls for greater collaboration against the drug trade not only in Guyana, but the Caribbean region. It said  successive PPP/Civic-led governments have been waging a battle against drug trafficking, through training of personnel, increased resources, both human and physical, based on the National Drug Strategy Master Plans and it has always maintained that fighting the illicit drug trade is not a one-country/one-region task, but a battle that needs to be fought by all countries of the world.

This was offered over 20 years ago and the PPP refused since they turned a blind eye to the drug trade. Remember, who refuse to extradite drug king pins and fought this in court?...the corrupt PPP. Now, was not RK their in-house drug lord and security chief to the party?

20 years ago?  So you telling the new govt they are incapable.  Maybe so, but no Govt just readily cede authority to a foreign power.  However, Guyana is a tough place to patrol given it's vastness and emptiness.  GoG needs to acquire drones and integrate with law enforcement.  The USG could play a critical role in this area.
