Residents of Lusignan and PPP/C supporters, present at the Party’s rally held at Lusignan Tarmac, were reminded of the major achievements made from 1992 to the present.

These achievements have helped citizens to enjoy the trickledown effect of development, elevated living standards and livelihood, improved quality of health services and education, and positive recognition for the country internationally.

Presidential Candidate Donald Ramotar said the continued development of Guyana will continue after general elections; as the aim is to take Guyana to another level of development. He further added that the PPP/C Party has done extremely well as it has achieved much for its citizens, whilst enduring the hardships meted out by those seeking power for the sake of power.

“The achievements made would not have been made if discrimination was present in the party. On the contrary, the Party discriminates in the interest of the poor, the vulnerable and the vast majority of its citizens, as the Party’s philosophy is that, social and economic progress cannot be achieved in a sustained manner if there is no political democracy in our system…. When we came to government the size of the country’s debt was seven and a half times the Country’s GDP, with 94 percent of every dollar earned being spent to repay debts. However the country’s debt today is less than 50 percent of the country’s GDP, and takes up 4 percent of every dollar earned,” Ramotar said.

Ramotar also said that the PPP/C Party under his leadership will take Guyana to higher levels in that struggle which was started years ago, a struggle for the complete modernization of the country and the lifting of the standards of living for its citizens.

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds speaking to supporters at the PPP/C rally at Lusignan Tarmac

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds said he is pleased to see that the unity that the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan had once fought for evident in 2011, with elections that are free and fair.

Hinds said that many citizens can testify that over the years the PPP/C government has returned democracy to Guyana and with it significant development. Additionally, thousands of low-income earners are proud home-owners, a thing that could not have happened in the past.

“The PPP/C will continue to grow from strength to strength because we are committed to the development of the country and its citizens. I thank President Bharrat Jagdeo for leading us into development. He has taken us to great achievements and has brought us to a high platform, as we have moved six-fold from 1992 to 2011, from a point where our income were averaged income to an income which sees us improving our living standards and owning our own homes,” Hinds said.

Presidential Adviser on Governance Odinga Lumumba said that President Bharrat Jagdeo has given the country respect around the world by becoming the champion of the earth and the establishing of a Low Carbon Development Strategy, which sees him lobbying for forest conservation.

“We have gained from the dynamics and wise leadership of President Jagdeo, who as President, sitting in the chair of the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan, acquiring significant knowledge, and making Guyana’s presence felt on the international scene,” Lumumba said.

Lumumba also alluded to the fact that under the PPP/C administration the country has seen the construction of a Berbice University which serves the educational needs of those residing in that location of the country; the construction of a number of schools from nursery to secondary, across the country; the modernization of Amerindian communities; the pursuit of cheaper fuel with the Amaila Falls project; a number of new housing schemes across the country where persons are proud owners of homes; the One Laptop per Family Initiative, where 90,000 under priviledge residents will own a laptop and further, receive training in the use of Information Communication Technologies; modern airports both at Timehri and Ogle and the exploration for oil by the CGX oil company.

Attorney-at-Law and Executive Member of the PPP/C Party, Anil Nandalall said prior to 1992, moreso during the 1960s, the country was ripped apart by racial violence and the national unity enjoyed then was destroyed by riots. However, after gaining power in 1992, the PPP/C administration pursued racial unity.

“We have achieved the goal that was set forth in our 1992 manifesto, and in 2011 we are seeing that our people are united, and as we continue to come together to build and further the dream of a developed country, nothing will be able to stand in our way,” Nandalall said.

Nandalall further remarked that the 2011 elections is not just about building roads, schools, hospitals and housing schemes, as the administration has done that and will continue to do so; but rather, for the next five years, the administration will focus on transforming the country and its people will enjoy a new plane of development, as the country will be shifted from Third World to Second World.

He further alluded to the fact that Guyana is a blessed country with no natural disasters affecting it and rich in natural resources, and its citizens are recognized internationally as talented, wise and hard working people. Moreso, the significant sums invested in health and education from 1993 to present have borne fruit, with Guyana topping the Caribbean’s Secondary Examinations four out of five years consistently, evidence of progress and the administration’s unyielding commitment to young people.
