Delivering Essequibo out of a state of desolation is among the highlights of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) track record of achievements according to President Bharrat Jagdeo who spoke to a massive crowd on the Essequibo Coast today.
The occasion was the ruling party’s campaign rally at Damon Square, Anna Regina as the countdown to national and regional elections which is less than two weeks away, continues.
Numerous speakers took to the podium before President Jagdeo and Presidential Candidate Donald Ramotar making reference to “abortion road,” the words used to describe the past state of the road from Supenaam to Charity.
President Jagdeo recalled his first public meeting in the Cinderella County in the 1990s and the hopeless circumstances he said was evident to the eye and mirrored across the country.

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds who also shared the platform also recalled his visit to the county with the late President Dr. Cheddi Jagan 21 years ago, noting the bad state of the road as the first observation.
President Jagdeo pointed a finger at the bad economic policies of the former regime, the People’s National Congress (PNC) which he said robbed Guyana of democracy and ruled undemocratically for 28 years.
“The PNC was borrowing… but not investing. They were consuming wealth which led us to have one of the worst, highest debt in the world. By the time we got into office, 94 percent of revenue went to service that debt,” President Jagdeo said.
The debt scale is now down to 4 percent of the country’s revenue and President Jagdeo credited this achievement to resilience of the ruling party to fix the economy.

Chairman of Region Two Ali Baksh told the crowd that Essequibo today has increased paddy production from 400,000 bags to one million bags per crop while about 28 truckloads of exports travel daily to Supenaam on route to Georgetown.
He said 6000 acres of land are at present being developed for nontraditional crops at Aurora and Good Hope in anticipation for the two new roll on roll off ferries that are soon expected in Guyana.
Baksh turned his attention to education in Essequibo, pointing to the growth in secondary schools along the coast from one to eight, from five primary schools to 38 and from nine nursery schools to 29.
The investment is paying off with the increasing number of passes at the Grade Six and Caribbean Secondary Examination Council. Shyam Nokta who was part of those addressing the gathering said some of the brightest minds are coming from Region Two and with the rapidly emerging Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector, the future will be brighter.

Ramotar assured residents that Essequibo will be benefitting from the merits of improved ICT in Guyana when the fibre optic cable passes through Essequibo all the way to Charity.
“When we bring the cable over here (a new faster cable), we will be able to produce thousands more jobs in call centres to absorb many of the people who are still to be employed today. More than that we will also be able to provide services to companies abroad,” Ramotar said.
Ramotar said the current Government once reelected will also be turning its attention to the agriculture sector and continue the venture of increasing the food production scale to promote food security and meeting the demands of the rest of the world.
The plan according to Ramotar includes the introduction into new, talks with the private sector to change the business as usually approach, strengthening governance to ensure that people and companies get a proper return for the money they invest.
He said work has started on the Amaila Falls Hydropower Project (AFHP) and when complete will add value to the processing and manufacturing sectors and significantly reduce the cost of electricity.
Among the highlights of today’s campaign was the appearance by popular local artistes, Vanilla, Big Red and Mahendra Ramkellawan including two surprises, Trinidad and Tobago’s chutney monarch Ricky Jai and overseas based Guyanese artiste Terry Gajraj.
President Jagdeo defended his criticisms of sections of the media and challenged them to answer critical questions such as the reason for Raphael Trotman’s visit to Buxton, during his tenure in the PNC, taped conversations with purported politicians and Nigel Hughes comments about East Indians holding senior positions.
