Bartica, Region Seven continues to take the lead in efforts to develop the mining sector and although the People's Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C administration has assured that the sector's future will be sustainable, it wants the community to develop beyond mining.

This was the message brought to a massive gathering of residents today in Bartica as the ruling party held its elections campaign rally in the hub of the community, a few weeks before the hosting of national and regional elections in Guyana.

President Bharrat Jagdeo who shared the platform with PPP/C Presidential candidate Donald Ramotar, believes that the Region has potential beyond mining even as there are plans to expand gold and diamond mining.

"Bartica will not only be a mining area, Bartica has the potential for tourism development. Bartica can become a hub because of what we have planned in the education and ICT (Information Communication Technology) sector, so you have an extremely bright future to look forward to," President Jagdeo said.

The Government is at present investing in the laying of a fibre optic cable from neighbouring Brazil, which, when complete will bring down the cost of bandwidth, thereby making access to the internet cheaper and more reliable.

Ramotar told the gathering that more than 3,000 jobs have been created in Guyana through fibre optic cable driven technology and in the near future more employment opportunities are to be created.

The possibilities are endless and the government is confident that Guyana will reach a stage where a significant degree of work can be done from the comfort of one's own home if the requisite tools are available.

In this regard, Ramotar told the gathering that the Government's One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) programme is within reach, alluding to the arrival of the first batch of 5,000 Haier branded laptops as proof.

Bartica's own Elvis Seeram and miner Frederick Mc Wilfred were the two new faces on the PPP/C platform who confirmed their membership on the ruling party's team while speaking to the huge crowd.

The speakers reiterated that it is Government's intention to keep the mining sector alive rather than have it shut down, contrary to what was rumoured by the opposition.

Ramotar said, "If mining is employing so many people, if mining is generating so much wealth for development in the country, who in their right sense would want to stop mining? Those people who are saying that obviously, are insulting your own intelligence," Ramotar said.

Rumours of a plot to shut down mining had prompted miners in Bartica to stage protest action to draw the Government's attention to their concern. Mc Wilfred who played an active part in that activity, today acknowledged President Jagdeo for heeding their call.

"President Jagdeo responded... he put (Minister) Robeson Benn in charge of a land use committee," Mc Wilfred said, reading an excerpt of a letter written by a small miner expressing appreciation to the President for affording small miners the opportunity to be involved in the work of the special land use committee.

Mc Wilfred said his endorsement of the PPP/C was met by a number of negative reactions by some of his close associates but explained that his decision to join the party was motivated by his confidence in Ramotar's capacity to lead Guyana to further development.

Stakeholders in the mining sector were lauded for their contributions to the record performance in gold over the years, reaching a record of beginning with a record 308,000 ounces in recent years.

Other speakers at the rally were Ministers of: Transport and Hydraulics, Robeson Benn; Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai and Public Service Dr. Jennifer Westford.

The only promise they have stopped in offering is a weekly government subsidized lap dance for every virile male! Someone need to ask why is it that these promises have not been acted on in the past two decades.

This cabal of crooks know they have a hardened base and so are trying their asses off to maintain that tiny simple majority. Their bill for this election will be in the millions just to try to haul in that few points. After all, their unrestricted access to the soup line is being threatened!

PPP warns that opposition-led gov't will give guns to criminals

Mr. Ramotar, Mr. Jagdeo and Mr. Freddie Mc Wilfred lead supporters to the PPPC's rally venue at Ramnauth Square, Bartica.
The People's Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) on Saturday warned Barticians not to trust the opposition coalition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), because if they come to power they would take government guns and give them to criminals.

The PPP also warned Barticians against voting for the opposition, saying that that could lead to greater insecurity worse than the Bartica massacre.

Addressing a rally in the mining township, outgoing president, Bharrat Jagdeo charged that if the opposition wins the November 28 general election criminals would be armed with weapons from the state’s armouries.

“You have had some theft of weapons from the army in the past but if they were to get into power, they don’t have to steal weapons anymore, they will get the weapons to give to the bandits,” said Jagdeo.

Similar comments were made by the Guyanese leader at Babu John, Port Mourant, East Berbice during a commemorative event in honour of late presidents Cheddi and Janet Jagan.
Jagdeo noted that Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) leader, Robert Corbin and many others cannot account for many of the weapons that were taken from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) during the 1970s and 1980s at a time when A Partnership for National Unity’s (APNU) presidential candidate, David Granger was a member of the army.
The president cautioned Barticians against voting for the opposition, saying they have a track-record of supporting and having links with criminal gangs like those that killed 12 persons in Bartica on February 17, 2008.
“The very famous Wikileaks said that the PNC had its hand in what took place in terrorizing the people in Buxton and those same individuals were part of the killings here in Bartica. Are we going to allow those people to ever run our country? Are we going to allow them to get the reins of power here in Guyana,” he said,
The PPP/C campaigners used the opportunity to link key opposition politicians, lawyers – Nigel Hughes, Debra Backer and Raphael Trotman- to criminal gangs, saying that they have been representing them in the courts.
“Some of the people, who are living now in prison and some who were killed by the security forces for that massacre - those who participated, were defended in the past by some very prominent people.”
The PPP/C’s Ramotar called on Basil Williams to explain what it was he had been thanking then Police Commissioner, Winston Felix for at a time when eight persons were killed on the East Bank Demerara. Recordings of that purported conversation had been circulated by associates of now convicted drug trafficker, Shaheed ‘Roger’ Khan.
The Guyana government and the PPP/C have consistently denied opposition charges that they have had links with Khan in the past.
In his address, PPP/C presidential candidate, Donald Ramotar said that Granger had contributed to de-professionalizing the GDF by having the army swearing loyalty to the PNC. He also accused APNU prime ministerial candidate, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine of betraying co-founder of the Working Peoples Alliance (WPA), Dr Walter Rodney who was assassinated in 1980.
The WPA had consistently maintained that the PNC-led administration of the late Forbes Burnham had assassinated Rodney through GDF electronics expert, Sergeant Gregory Smith.
