Outgoing President Bharrat Jagdeo gives a farewell wave at the PPP/C Unity Concert and Rally at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence
Delivering his final remarks as Head of State to the last campaign event for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), outgoing President Bharrat Jagdeo told an estimated 100,000 supporters what the future will ensure under the party’s presidential hopeful Donald Ramotar.
The Guyana National Stadium at Providence, East Bank Demerara was the venue for the culminating Unity Concert, held two days before Guyanese head to the polls to cast their votes at the 2011 national and regional elections.
President Jagdeo implored supporters to make it their duty to vote on elections day but more particularly keep a watchful eye as there may be several divisive characters seeking to stir trouble.

“The security forces have been in training for a while now and they will be deployed… anyone who tries to disrupt these polls or harm people because of who they vote for will be dealt with the way they should,” President Jagdeo said.
The Head of State made reference to previous elections where there was a resort to violence by some who did not find favour with the outcome. He pointed a finger at the People’s National Congress (PNC) for such reprehensible acts.
“There is no place for violence anymore in Guyana, we reject all of it. GECOM (Guyana Elections Commission) is ready for a good poll on Monday and we have to be vigilant that we safeguard this right too,” President Jagdeo said.

He touted the PPP/C as the only party with a track record of progress, pointing to the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS), Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) and the competitiveness strategy as the engines.
The aforementioned strategies are the ones which President Jagdeo said, outline Guyana’s development path and assured they will double the country’s income in the near future, eliminate unemployment, guarantee homeownership.
“The older folks can rest assured that when they retire they don’t fall into poverty … growing healthcare will be of a world class and… our children will have the best education in the world… we will be the most computer literate in the world… we will have the largest share of renewable energy in any country in the world, used to supply our electricity needs,” President Jagdeo said.

The ruling party’s plans were compared to that of the opposition and according to President Jagdeo, the others offer nothing but glitz, glib words and false promises and lack of concern for anyone.
He said while the PPP has been touting its policies throughout the campaigns, the opposition’s rhetoric is nothing but criticism about the ruling party.
“Criticisms don’t build country. You have to have a plan… we have taken them on too because we are not eunuchs. When they come after us we will take them on but we are not a party of the past,” President Jagdeo said.
The rally and concert featured performances by popular sound systems and artistes including “KI” and “Destra,” from Trinidad and Tobago who livened the crowd with energy and exuberance.
Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai speaking at the PPP/C Unity Concert and Rally
Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai who shared the podium spoke on behalf of the indigenous peoples of Guyana, stating that government’s programme of development in the hinterland is in “no small measure.”
She said President Jagdeo has been a true son of the late President Dr. Cheddi Jagan as he ensured that indigenous people reach a level where they are respected and have authority over their land.
She made reference to universal access to primary education and the significant enhancement at the secondary level and legislation for the vulnerable sections of society including women and children.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon spoke of the many accomplishments under President Jagdeo and assured that “a new era” will begin under Donald Ramotar.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds said he is proud to have served in the government for the 19 years it has been in office and more particularly under the twelve year tenure of President Jagdeo.
Mr. Hinds recalled in the 1992 when the ruling party extended an invitation to all those willing to work along with it and reestablish unity that he was among the first to respond to the call.
