Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad outlines the benefits of GuyExpo at the launch of this year’s trade show to be held from September 29- October 2, at the Sophia Exhibition Site.
MINISTER of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Mr. Manniram Prashad said, Wednesday, that GuyExpo is not just another fete but rather an opportunity for businesses to showcase their creativity and to network. He was speaking at the inauguration of GuyExpo 2011, at the Guyana International Conference Centre, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.
Themed ‘Expanding Investment in a Sustainable Environment’, the much anticipated trade fair and exposition is expected to attract participation not just from local businesses but international contributors, as well.
Prashad said the chosen theme is in recognition of Guyana’s growth, continued support and strategy to expand investment opportunities.
He expressed pride over the exposition’s accomplishments and noted that it has continuously provided Guyanese businesses and entrepreneurs with a lucrative and growing market to advertise, promote and sell their products and services.
“Over the years, many small businesses have grown as a result of their participation in this event and, this year, in addition to the increase in participation by craft producers, we are expecting delegations from Suriname, India, China and the Caribbean…it’s going to be big this year,” Prashad stated.
He said an average of 30,000 people is expected to visit the exhibition site every night, which is testimony to how the event has evolved over the years.
Pashad pointed out that GuyExpo had such a positive impact on the Tourism Sector in Guyana that it spawned several other expositions, like the Berbice, Parika and Rupununi expositions.
“GuyExpo brings out the local talent and it is an opportunity to showcase what we have,” he reiterated, disclosing that the event is already sold out and space had to be limited for exhibitors.
New market
Testimony to the Administration’s drive to promote and support the growth of business in Guyana, the Tourism Minister announced that Government is sending 12 Guyanese craft producers, who could not otherwise afford it, to the prestigious International Craft Show in Santo Domingo this year, because it is a new market into which Guyana wants to tap.
As to what the patrons can expect at this year’s show, Prashad explained that the organising committee has made some changes in response to concerns raised after GuyExpo 2010, including expansion of the exhibition area, provision of additional access to and from the site, in addition to some changes in the layout of the venue.
“We have improved the traffic situation and we have patched the roads. We are improving the street lighting and have taken several new initiatives just to ensure that the experience patrons have is improved significantly,” he informed.
Prashad also disclosed that a business seminar, on September 28, will be included on the list of activities leading up to the exhibition, to focus on how to conduct business in this country.
“We expect more than 70 businesses from Suriname, 35 from Brazil and others from India, China, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Antigua,” he revealed, announcing, too, that 10 new products will be put on the market.
“This year we will have a great expo and I am urging all Guyanese to come out and support local as we have come a long way towards developing business in Guyana,” the Tourism Minister encouraged.
GuyExpo 2011 will be staged September 29 to October 2 at the Sophia Exhibition Site, with a cover charge of $500 and, among its major sponsors are Digicel, Guyana Telephone &Telegraph Company (GT&T), Banks DIH, Ansa McAl and Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL).
