President calls on supporters to demand end to lawlessness – as scores turn out to Cheddi Jagan fun day
The schedule of activities during the month of March to commemorate the life and work of late Dr. Cheddi Jagan, climaxed today with Fun Day on the lawns of State House that was suitable for a family outing.
Patrons began pouring in as the gates to the venue were opened at around 14:00 h, to the sounds of the Shakti Strings band and popular energetic local chutney artistes performed. Among them were reigning Mashramani Soca Monarch Jomo and his colleague Adrian Dutchin, along with Fiona Singh who were the crowd favourites.
Around the venue were booths with pictorial and video displays of Dr. Jagan and successive Heads of State under the People’s Progressive Party and developments in the various social sectors under the current administration.
Patrons also had the option of purchasing leather and handicraft paraphernalia, beverages, or having their hands decorated at a special booth.
President Donald Ramotar took some time off to mingle with the crowd, shaking hands, sharing photo opportunities and viewing the displays that were exhibited.
But in the midst of the celebration he reminded the gathering about the struggles Dr. Jagan endured for Guyana’s independence and the freedoms that were not afforded in the era of tyranny.
Reference was made to the long lines that had to be formed before ordinary Guyanese could have gained access to basic necessities, as President Ramotar painted a picture of how grim the situation was in the past.
He implored that Guyanese should make it their duty to be the custodians of the freedom now enjoyed, particularly at a time when there is an apparent threat with the actions of the joint Opposition in the Parliament since attaining a one-seat majority.
Last year’s cut to the country’s national budget and threats this year to take a similar course of action, gagging of Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee and rejecting the legislation to amend the firearms law are among the obstructive actions of the opposition.
Talks of a snap election to resolve the present situation are being mooted in the public domain and were such a situation to play out, the ruling party would win, Minister Rohee said during his remarks at the Fun Day.
