President continues treatment in Cuba
PRESIDENT David Granger on Saturday departed Guyana for Cuba to continue receiving treatment for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
The Ministry of the Presidency, in a brief statement, said that the Guyanese leader was accompanied by his wife, First Lady Mrs. Sandra Granger.
The President, last November, was diagnosed with the type of cancer. Although the President has reduced his number of public engagements ever since his diagnosis, he has managed to address the citizenry on various political issues.
His most recent address was publicised on Friday when he assured that his government was not unconstitutional and that there is no legal impediment that restrains it from exercising its functions or requires it to assume only ‘caretaker’ functions.
In an address to the nation, the Guyanese leader said notwithstanding the passage of the motion of no-confidence in the National Assembly on December 21, last year, the current political situation “should not be a cause for alarm and anxiety”.
To this end, he said he is prepared to do his part to ensure credible elections are held, as he underscored the importance of political cooperation at this critical juncture of the country’s history.
