- several interventions underway in seriously affected areas

President Donald Ramotar and MMA/ADA General Manager Rodulph Gajraj intercats with farmers at Perth Baiboo

Dam maintenance and construction, and deployment of drainage pumps, and excavators are some of the measures being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture in light of La Nina phenomenon, as interventions intensify to ensure that farmers' losses are at a minimal.

President Donald Ramotar, Minister of Agriculture Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), Chief Executive Officer Lionel Wordsworth and Mahaica-Mahaicony-Abary/Agricultural Development Authority, General Manager Rudolph Gajraj visited several areas in Regions Four and Five where they interacted with farmers and residents.

During the meetings today at several points in Flagstaff, Hope, Perth Baiboo (little and big), Cottage and Mahaicony Branch Road several interventions were highlighted and suggestions raised with the aim of ensuring that farmers and residents work collaboratively with Government.

Since the inception of the abnormal rainy period, additional measures have been undertaken to ensure that cash crops, livestock and rice farmers' livelihoods are not lost. This saw technical staff being deployed across the 10 administrative regions to assist in this regard.

Residents and farmers were today given the assurance by President Ramotar of the Administration's commitment to ensure that their livelihoods are protected. This will see the continued deployment of equipment by all sub-agencies and the distribution of fuel to farmers to assist in the pumping of water off the land and the desilting of canals.

The level of water in the East Demerara Water Conservancy (EDWC), was today at a threatening level and the Agriculture Ministry is calling on all relevant authorities to remain vigilant.

President Donald Ramotar and Minister of Agriculture Leslie Ramsammy and MMA/ADA General Manager Rodulph Gajraj interacts with farmers and residents.

While there has been no reported cases of breach thus far to the dam of the conservancy, Minister Ramsammy has reported that the height at the EDWC as of last evening was at 58.6 GD . The Maduni sluice is opened at low tide to drain water from the EDWC.

Ramsammy said that while water has receded in several areas the situation in the Mahaica, Mahaicony and Abary areas is more acute.

“Right now our struggle is to save the rice crops and we are working with farmers to do so. Cash crops like in Black Bush and Canal have been lost and we are working now to ensure that animals and rice are protected,” Minister Ramsammy assured.

In this regard, 12 excavators are currently deployed in the Mahaicony/Mahaica areas to assist in emergency works. Similar interventions are being undertaken throughout the country.

“The farmers have been supportive as much as they can to do their own person pumping. Every pump and sluice is working as per normal and every engineer is out trying to see what they can do to help,” he said.

Government has always been supportive of farmers and over the years, significant assistance has been channelled to ensure that Guyana continues to supply its ever-growing markets regionally and internationally.

“It is anticipated that the La Nina condition will persist into March and as such, will require continued vigilance and support from all stakeholders in this regard so we have to remain alert because some days we will see that we have four to five inches of rainfall, when our drainage system is built for two inches,” he emphasised.

The Ministry is currently sourcing additional resources to support the Water Users Association and the Local Government Authorities in its dam maintenance programme countrywide, since the Hydromet Office has predicted intense rainfall in the coming weeks.

While, pumps have been functioning as normal to reduce the level of water on the land, the Agriculture Minister has expressed hope that the water would recede and the Ministry would not have to open the Lama Sluice.

“Opening the Lama on top of what we have here is going to be disastrous and so we have an already serious condition that could be made worse if the conservancy level does not drop,” Minister Ramsammy said.

General Secretary of the Rice Producers Association, Dharamkumar Seeraj was also at hand interacting with farmers.

The Hope canal is being built to alleviate the flooding. Also remediation works are already lowering the impact. Just a few years ago this type of rain fall would have had greater consequences but due to proactive drainage and irrigation works the impact has been alleviated.

It is quite normal for govt officials to empathize with the people by visiting the sites of disaster. In the US GW Bush only visited by helicopter, at least Ramotar is down in the dirt with long boots.

It is good to see President Ramotar taking the bull by the horns--he is demonstrating leadership and rallying the troops.

Guyana is below sea level--and hence flooding will be a recurring problem when there is severe rainfall in the country.

Your comment regarding PNC folks is spot on---they are in hiding right now---they'll probably start marching and protesting after the rain is over and the flooding subsides.

PNC MANTRA: Only Granger and Trotman can solve this flooding in Guyana.

Coastal flooding is inherent to Guyana with much major/larger ones on record occuring in the 1800's due to the effects of cyclic erosion.

Ven Te Chow's engineering books has detailed information on these unique abnormal effects/actions specific to Guyana.

There are those who address the flooding issues with understanding; Guyana coastlands are about five ( 5 ) feet below sea level; while others engage with nonsensical expressions.

Unfounded claims. It is the residents that clog the kokers with trash. So far we have heard of no instances of clogged or malfunctioning kokers as the cause for this particular flood. You people like to speak out of your rear just so you can hear your own flatulence.

Where is the opposition?

Are they preparing their speeches to blame the government?

Why isn't the opposition using their majority to
pass a relief bill for the poor people?

Good question but you will not get an answer from these FOOLS.

I heard from the grape vine that the Opposition will use their majority to legislate higher wages for themselves.

Those morons wants to lower taxes and at the same time want to give more money to the police force , army, teachers and civil servants.

They want lower VAT and undo some of the developments in progess, which will cost more to cancel than complete.

Maybe this will SHUT some Al Yuh up.

Disgusting behaviour by the police

ON February 6, 2012 I was driving along the Railway Embankment from the East Coast to Georgetown. In the vicinity of Conversation Tree on the Embankment Road, a police car, licence plate Number PKK 1903, turned in front of me also heading to Georgetown.

Just as the car turned, I noticed the officer sitting in the passenger seat throw out a food box (Styrofoam) on the roadway. I was most appalled at this act. Driving a little further up behind them, and before approaching Sherriff Street, it was most shocking once again to see the driver of the police car, pelting out an empty plastic water bottle!

This was most disgusting! How could policemen in "uniform" and in a police vehicle commit such acts? They are supposed to be men of the law, men who are expected to reprimand others for committing such an act!

Now it leaves you to wonder who will reprimand who, if the officers themselves have no respect for the law and the uniforms they are in possession of.

Guyana already has a drainage problem, and one of the major issues with that is the Styrofoam boxes and plastic bottles. How could officers who are supposed to protect our beautiful country from being desecrated are the ones to commit such heinous acts? It certainly leaves you to wonder!
