President Granger commissions three new school buses

Students of the North West Secondary School, Region One, and surrounding schools, would have arrived yesterday morning in one of the three new buses commissioned by President David Granger and the Regional Administration on Sunday last, under the 5B’s initiative.
The commissioning ceremony was held at the North-West Secondary School and was attended by the President along with Minister of Indigenous Peoples Affairs, Sydney Allicock, Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan and Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder.
While two of the buses were catered for in the Region’s budget, through the Regional Administration, one of the buses was donated by the President.
Each bus will transport 15 pupils on every trip to the various schools within the district.
The President in his address reiterated the importance of education and the vital nature of pupils and students being able to access education. It is against this backdrop that he noted, upon his designation as president, he shifted education to being a priority in the development of the country.
“My first idea was that education was paramount for the children of Guyana. No more dropouts. We want to provide access, so that there are enough schools for you to get to within your respective regions, and we want to ensure that your attendance is as high as it could be.”
The Head of State sought to remind those in attendance that he will continue to invest in the education sector, since it is the ‘gateway’ to becoming employed and improving other aspects of the country.
The children were urged to take care of the buses.
The donation was well received by Regional Chairman Brentnol Ashley who reassured that the transportation will be used to ensure that children in far-flung communities are able to get to school, safely and on time.
This commissioning follows one of several that the President has conducted since he took office, with the most recent being in August 21 of this year.
The 5B’s initiative includes the provision of buses, boats, bicycles, books and breakfast. East Berbice-Corentyne, Mahaica-Berbice and Pomeroon-Supenaam are some of the Regions that have benefitted from the projects so far. Kuru-Kururu, parts of Georgetown and the East Bank, are currently a few areas that children are benefitting from free transportation to and from school.
