President plugs national unity and celebration of Guyana’s diversity -at Lord Hanuman murti consecration at Blairmont

President David Granger has urged residents of Blairmont, West Coast Berbice to use their religious faith to promote peace, unity and harmony even as the administration continues to work to transform the country into a more cohesive society. The President was at the time speaking at the prana pratistha or consecration ceremony of a 4.5 metre tall ‘murti’ (statue) of the Hindu God, Lord Hanuman at the Blairmont Mandir.

President David Granger being welcomed to the Blairmont Mandir for the prana pratistha ceremony of the Lord Hanuman Murti by Pandit Rajin Lallaram, this morning.

Minister of Social Cohesion, Ms. Amna Ally, Regional Chairman, Mr. Vickchand Ramphal and other regional officials were also present at the ceremony.

President Granger said that he was extremely happy to receive an invitation to worship with them on this important occasion, which he said is evidence of the deep roots of Hinduism in Guyana. He reminded the gathering of his oath to serve as President of all of Guyana and said Guyana is a strong country because each ethnic group brings different strengths and is necessary for national development.

“The Blairmont Mandir stands on sacred ground.  It is central to the spiritual life of residents on the West Bank of Berbice. Devotees assemble there to worship and to enrich their spirituality so that they can learn and live according to the precepts of Hinduism… [This mandir] provides services to the community and brings residents together to improve their own lives.  It must continue to be a beacon to guide this community,” the Head of State said.

Speaking of Guyana’s culturally diverse society, the President said that he is of the firm view that the different ethnic and religious groups in Guyana need to develop a greater understanding of each other, so as to fully appreciate the richness of the nation’s diversity and strength of the country as a whole.

“We cannot be strong if we are ignorant. We cannot be strong if we misunderstand each other, but through understanding we will be better able to combine our energies and our strengths and ensure that our children live in an age of enlightenment rather than n age of darkness,” he said.

He also spoke of the importance of Hinduism in Guyana, which dates back 178 years. It was brought to the country by Indian indentured labourers in 1838 and today constitutes a significant demographic element. “This magnificent murti of Lord Hanuman is a public manifestation of private devotion. It is a physical expression of a divine spirit. It can be seen far and wide by anyone approaching Blairmont. It is proof that the adoration of Lord Hanuman is widespread. It is a reminder that his own grace is cast over the entire community,” President Granger said.

Meanwhile, officiating priest, Pandit Rajin Lallaram in his remarks said that the erection of the murti must serve as a source of motivation and strength for people as the deal with the everyday challenges that life presents.

“Everyday we awake we are greeted with some trial, some difficulty for which we have to be in the unending process of finding solutions. So today with this establishment of this murti, I am sure that it will give us an opportunity to reflect on the strengths that lie within us and to use that strength, courage, inner will and power to contribute to a better society, a better nation and the world by extension,” Pandit Lallaram said.

The murti, which stands on a concrete platform immediately next to the mandir, was constructed at the cost of over $900,000 by a privately owned company, located at Strathspey Village, East Coast Demerara.

Remember, Hanuman is the Monkey God.

That fat Pig Amna should not be invited near the Monkey God Hanuman. It is almost like Haram.

Hindus should demand that Granger rewrite that paper in which he denied and ignored that Indos were slaughtered, raped and murdered at Wismar.

The loyalty was spoken of MC LEAN and not Granger.

Bibi just had a heart attack as she swore that Granger would never be among Indians.

She must be calling those Hindus niggIndians for accepting him.

I can well imagine that she joins Prince and Yuji in their bigotry against blacks.

Notice how this man shows disrespect by refusing to wear at least a Kurta to enter the Temple.

Those quack pandits should be shown the door.

Those are not true Hindus and a disgrace to our Dharma.

Are there no Indo Presidential Bodyguards in Guyana, were they fired too ?

Indians have always been a welcoming and polite people.  As with Burnham, Granger will be treated with utmost respect.  It was never the Indians who destroyed unity and peaceful co-existence in Guyana.

One must remember, although Burnham frequented Indian centers, participated in Phagwah, lit diya, Viola frequented the Kali temple, etc, the grander scheme of ethnic cleansing, Black Apartheid, subjugation of Indians, etc was very much alive and well.  Burnham knew how to walk and chew gum at the same time.  Granger was his student!

It is not the ways of tolerant Indians.  We should accept people regardless.

Back in the days when there was  an important event at a Mandir or Masjid , leaders from both parties used to be invited. I think it was in 1970 when No 70 Masjid opened both DR Hagan and Prime Minister Burnham graced the occasion.

I wonder if the Mandir invited Mr. Jagdeo for this occasion.

There was no hard and fast rule. Some mosques and temples invited only Burnham while others invited only Jagan. When the De Willem Hindu Temple was officially opened in the early 1970s, Jagan was invited and I accompanied him. Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud officiated. Burnham was not invited even though the Guyana Pandits' Council had called him a Mahatma.

Muslims more than Hindus( organizations) always had a closer relationship with Mr. Burnham.

kp, GNI archive shows that Carib did not create the word "nigindians". Cobra was the first to use that word here, and he was referring to people like me and Django. That word first appeared here months ago.

Jagdeo cannot prove that Granger is a racist.

Even Luncheon couldn't provide evidence that Jagdeo wasn't.

What ever faults Granger has he treats Indians with respect.  He doesn't shoot them down in cold blood, or tear gas them like the PPP did to blacks, nor allow a criminal to slaughter them in the hundreds.

The brown bai KKK are so stupid that they try to pretend as if they don't have an arsenal of insults directed to those Indians who don't peddle their racist hatred of blacks.

I will add others. Neemakaram, Cuffy Lover, Congo Lover, and there are others that I have forgotten.

Also the brown bai KKK should cease implying that all Indians share their views.

And here is the PPP at work trying very hard to remain in the PERMANENT opposition. In fact they might well go the way of the UF as many of their supporters gravitate to multi ethnic opposition parties which might emerge.

Only a clown thinks that PPP/Roar can win an election in Guyana.

All to be frank they look quite bored.  But to your point they aren't attacking him as Druggie will want to imply.  They don't like him but respect the fact that he was president.
