On the 15th anniversary of the gruesome murder, President Irfaan Ali hailed the service of the late PPP/C Agriculture Minister, Satyadeow `Sash’ Sawh but he was silent on the call for a comprehensive inquiry which the family called for in a letter in yesterday’s Stabroek News.

Sawh’s unsolved murder in 2006 at the height of an unprecedented crime wave where deaths squads were at work has raised searing questions about the PPP/C’s commitment to really learn what had happened.

In his statement yesterday, the President lauded Sawh’s “sterling record of political and public service”.

“‘Sash’, as he was fondly known, lit up every occasion. His effusive and energetic presence was matched by a dedicated work ethic and a hands-on approach to the work of his Ministry. He was a people’s person who served his country unselfishly.

“Mr Satyadeow Sawh will be remembered for his sterling efforts in the struggle for democratic freedoms. While he lived in Canada, he was a tireless political livewire, organising and agitating for the restoration of democracy in Guyana.

“When democracy was restored on the 5th of October 1992, he was asked to serve as Guyana’s Ambassador to Venezuela. In that post, he rendered distinguished service.

“His efforts were so impressive that he was invited home to assume ministerial responsibilities.  Satyadeow Sawh helped to transform the agriculture sector during his tenure”, Ali said.

Referring to Sawh’s murder, the President said “His untimely and tragic death, fifteen years ago, robbed Guyana of a committed patriot whose service to country and to the cause of freedom and democracy is worthy of emulation”.

In his letter in Stabroek News on behalf of the family, Sawh’s son, Roger Sawh lamented that 15 years later relatives were none the wiser over the attack which also claimed the lives of two of the minister’s siblings and a security guard.

“Fifteen years on, and we, the family of the late Satyadeow Sawh, are none the wiser about the motives behind this heinous episode. For the avoidance of doubt, we would like to see an independent inquiry into the intellectual authorship behind the criminal events of April 22, 2006. Almost annually, we have raised a hue and cry for more to be done to unearth answers. Our calls for action have been … unequivocal, apolitical, persistent, passionate, public and private. Indeed, such calls have not been isolated either – most recently, there was an excellent letter by Geoff da Silva eloquently imploring action and, at various times over the years, prominent leaders from both major parties have publicly expressed support for an inquiry.

“Such an inquiry is necessary not only for the families of those who were killed, but also for the nation at large. Indeed, despite the passage of a decade and a half, we are still regularly asked by Guyanese of all stripes, at home and abroad, whether there are any answers about who, what, where, when and, most vigorously, why. At a time when President Ali’s administration is moving apace with a range of laudable projects and initiatives, our family optimistically and tirelessly implores the government (as past administrations have been implored) to put this issue on the front burner. Fifteen years is already too long; the time is now”, Roger Sawh said.

PP/C members, supporters and all Guyanese must demand justice for Sash Sawh and his family

DEAR EDITOR,

Kaieteur News – It is now 15 long years since Satyadeow ‘Sash’ Sawh, his sister Pulmatie Persaud, his brother Rajpat Sawh and the security guard Curtis Robertson were brutally murdered by terrorists on April 22, 2006.
It is an absolute shame that, after all these years, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has not publicly provided objective and complete answers for what happened to one of its leaders, nor has it identified the organisers of this terrorist act. These murders should be one of the priority ‘cold cases’ to be solved.
Sash Sawh served three PPP/C Presidents – Cheddi Jagan, Janet Jagan and Bharrat Jagdeo. Therefore, the PPP/C has the primary responsibility for putting an end to the hearsay, rumours and theories about supposedly inner-party jealousies, forestry concessions and drug lords. We Guyanese, at home and in the diaspora, need an answer as to why police assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) never materialised.
All PPP/C members and supporters must support his wife, sons, relatives and friends who have been consistently calling on the PPP/C leadership, for over 10 years now, to complete a full and proper investigation.
Satyadeow Sawh was a patriot and internationalist whose time among us was too short. He was a compassionate and intelligent person who graduated from York University in Toronto with a Degree in Economics.
He was one of the most effective democratic leaders in the Guyanese diaspora in North America, an outstanding Ambassador for Guyana and one of the most dynamic, efficient and effective Ministers ever in any Guyanese Government.
As we know, between 1968 and 1985 in Guyana, there were rigged elections, economic decline and trends towards dictatorship and the militarisation of the society. That was a very difficult time for the democratic forces in Guyana. Some PPP leaders in Guyana defected to the PNC, others drifted out of politics, and Walter Rodney was assassinated in 1980.
From 1982 to 1993, in response to these challenges, Sash Sawh, the patriot, led the Association of Concerned Guyanese (ACG) in Toronto to organise the Guyanese diaspora and Canadian organisations to support the successful return of democracy to Guyana in 1992.
As an internationalist, Sash also led the ACG to support organisations in Toronto that were struggling for an end to nuclear arms, for the liberation of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, for an end to dictatorships in Central and South America and for progressive change in the Caribbean, Europe and Asia.
From 1993 to 1996 in Venezuela, Satyadeow Sawh distinguished himself as an Ambassador for Guyana. In recognition of his contribution to improving relations between the Guyanese and Venezuelan nations, he was honoured with a national award in Venezuela.
Today, the Guyanese diaspora in Venezuela, who number over 30,000 persons, still fondly remember Ambassador Sawh for his steadfast support of their legal rights in Venezuela and for facilitating many of their family members to return to Guyana.
In 1997, Satyadeow ‘Sash’ Sawh was mandated by the late President Dr. Cheddi Jagan to create the new Ministry of Fisheries, Other Crops and Livestock.
Under his leadership, the agricultural sector was diversified into new and expanded sub-sectors like honey production, commercial fish farming and processed juices.
As a Minister, Sash was humble, caring and approachable. He had an unbreakable grassroots connection with fisher folk, farmers, workers and the poor. He understood their problems, concerns and aspirations, and represented their interests with zeal, passion, and integrity.
Regardless of ethnicity or political affiliation, Minister Sawh carried the message of “food security” to farmers in their villages across Guyana. In meetings of CARICOM Ministers, he always proposed fresh ideas and new ways to meet the food needs of the Caribbean people.
Sash’s focus was on how farmers and processors could increase their incomes by exporting value-added products and by substituting imported foods with quality local products. There were successes. Seafood export revenues grew from US$3 million in the early 1990’s to over US$62 million in 2007. In 2001, over 40 percent of the chicken that Guyanese consumed was imported from the USA. By 2011, Guyana became self-sufficient in poultry production.
Everyone, especially young people, can learn a lot from Sash Sawh. He set an example by his deeds and not just his words. Even when things went wrong and there were defeats, he displayed an unwavering commitment to the cause of democracy and a better life for all Guyanese. His ethics were grounded in his religious and moral upbringing, the compassionate lessons of his parents, and his life experiences growing up in Mahaicony and, later, Georgetown.
The secret of Sash’s success was his self-sacrifice and devotion to what he loved to do, happily serving his family, country, farmers, workers, the poor and the disadvantaged. He was a loyal son, a fantastic father and husband, a patriot and an internationalist – a true humanitarian.
Sash was always dedicated, committed and loyal to the People’s Progressive Party/Civic.
He had an impressive ability to effectively articulate the struggles, aspirations and victories of workers, farmers and other working people. He was blessed with a booming voice and an undeniable ‘people’s touch’. This was confirmed at his funeral when thousands of Guyanese showed an outpouring of love for him because he was honest, forward-looking, competent and inspiring, and he had a genuine interest in their wellbeing.
His happy personality, joyous laugh and engaging smile infected everyone. He was a perpetual optimist. He was not a negative or complaining person. He was always cheerful and enthusiastic.
All PPP/C members and supporters and all Guyanese, at home and in the diaspora, cannot be silent and allow the injustice of April 22, 2006 to continue. We want the PPP/C government to hold an investigation now. If we do not do this, then it will be the PPP/C’s shame for generations to come.

The ACG in Toronto controlled both Cheddie and Janet. That was the PPP for his mistake, they became unapproachable. Unless one has contacts.

What do you mean?  The ACG controlled Cheddie and Janet?

Who is stupid enough to request that your guards do not carry firearms in a racist shithole failed State. Uncle Willie's dead body had Mr. Sawh's gold credit card on it. Case closed.  Also who ever ordered his death knew that his guards were not armed. Plus there had to be a level of planning because he and his family's killers would have been covered in blood and would have had to shower and change clothes shortly after the killing. The overkill of the crime scene was used to send a message. The message was clear. "You are a physical weak inferior and we have power over you". Just like the message that was sent with the killing of those kids in Annandale.

What will an inquiry do at this time?

Former President Jagdeo said that the PNC did it.

Eleven of the fifteen so-called Freedom fighters were taken out by the police force.

Why information wasn't given to the Police for an arrest of the perpetrators of the heinous crime ?

Who said that the police were not informed?  The Freedom fighters were controlled by the PNC. Robert Corbin, when he became the Leader of the PNC, went with the COP to Buxton and concerted with the Freedom fighters. That was why steps had to be taken to take out the FF. It was only when My friend Viticharran was kidnapped that I insisted they take out the culprits.

You have a habit of denying things that happened in the past.

PNC leadership didn't have any thing to do with the Freedom fighters. They sent Basil to Buxton to try calm things down. It was a minor radical core within the PNC which included Waddell that were promoting armed African response.

Why no arrest was made ? there is the habit of making erroneous conclusions.

Bharat Jagdeo tenure of President is tainted with Human Rights abuses ,drug trafficking ,trafficking of children ,unsolved murders ,the list is long ,no white washing can erase such.

One had go through them.

OK..I now understand what you mean.  However, I don't agree that you had to go through them.  After 1992 one could have gone through the Consulate or High Commission.  Of course, one could have have directly approached the government in Guyana .  Then there was the possibilty of going directly to Freedom House.  Of course, it would have depended on the issue one wanted addressed.

The way these killings were handled is truly pathetic. The President at that time apparently said he knew who carried out these killings, so do we know anything on this, so many years later?

The way it is being handled shows someone in the PPP had something to do with these killings....but, we are all aware the PPP members are all angels, they do no wrong.

Leaked embassy cables reveal…Interesting perspectives by US envoy on “Sash” Sawh killing

Two days after the shocking 2006 murder of former Minister of Fisheries, Satyadeow “Sash”   Sawh, senior Guyanese functionaries had met the then United States Ambassador Roland Bullen asking for help to solve the case and recover more than 30-AK47s that went missing from the army.
According to recently released embassy cables from the whistleblower website, Wikileaks, the local US Embassy, headed by then Ambassador Roland Bullen, were examining at least three theories that led to the killing of the “jocular” Minister – one of the being a retaliation from a militant, Buxton –based group and two others that were linked with drugs.

Satyadeow “Sash” Sawh

The cables which were supposed to be confidential and sent by the local embassy to the US Secretary of State, also spoke of President’s Bharrat Jagdeo’s mood at the meeting.
According to the cables, Sawh was killed on April 22, and on April 24, Bullen met with Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, then later with President Jagdeo, to discuss the government of Guyana’s (GOG) request for security related assistance.
“Jagdeo and Luncheon essentially admitted that the public’s patience with the GOG’s performance on security is wearing thin, and they are looking for a response that “captures the public’s imagination”. The GOG has also asked Canada and the UK for help,” the cable dated May 4 said.
The cables were detailed.
“Jagdeo’s mood was somber, with a visibly furrowed brow. Minister Sawh’s killing has clearly hit senior GOG officials hard. Their psychological moat that made them feel separated and protected from Guyana’s security problem has vanished.”
The Ambassador, in the cable, said that according to Luncheon, Jagdeo has just about exhausted the Guyana security forces’ investigative capabilities and so they are forced to seek greater international assistance.
“Post’s impression is that Sawh’s killing has really woken up senior GOG politicos to the loss of state control over the country’s security.”
Dr. Luncheon, followed up with a written request for help, admitting that the government had
recognized that the assassination of Minister Sawh has created the gravest threat to the country’s democracy.
“Significantly, there are other threats associated with the existence of the criminal gang in Buxton and the intellectual authors of their crimes. Also the loss of the large number of AK-47 weapons from the military is still unexplained and recovery unrealised.”
Luncheon asked for assistance expanding investigations into the loss of the AK-47 weapons from the military, leading to the recovery, enhancing the Criminal Investigation Department’s investigation into the murder of Minister Sawh and his family, and for crime fighting equipment for an elite force.
The Ambassador also said that Minister of Home Affairs, Gail Teixeira; the Commissioner of Police, Winston Felix, and the Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force, Brigadier Edward Collins, were consulted prior to dispatching this request.

Roland Bullen

“Rather, the request reflects what President Jagdeo, Luncheon and the Cabinet want during this moment of sorrow and possibly panic.”
Regarding the theories for the killing of Sawh, his sister, brother and security guard at the Minister’s LBI’s resident, the Embassy said it heard many stories about the motives.
In the first instance there was a political angle.
“A militant, presumably Afro-Guyanese anti-government faction wants to gain greater political power but feels it cannot do so through Guyana’s democratic process. The GOG is peddling this theory, and the GOG leadership is paranoid about a treasonous cadre of current and former military and police officers. This militant group is centered in Buxton, a coastal village approximately six miles east of Georgetown that is essentially beyond state control.”
The embassy at that time said it believed that a corollary to this theory is that Sawh was targeted in revenge for the January, 2006, killing of prominent Afro-Guyanese journalist and “rabble-rouser”, Ronald Waddell.
“To this end, the joint services have engaged in a series of searches of Buxton, which have netted night vision goggles, military uniforms, and other pieces of military equipment. Ballistics tests performed at spent shells from the Sawh murder scene prove that the same weapons were used in the February 26 Agricola/Eccles massacre and another gruesome shooting/beheading in Agricola in March 2005.”
According to Bullen, Luncheon, the government’s spokesman, might have fueled the political angle when he publicly mused in the April 27 post-Cabinet briefing that unspecified members of the PNCR have contacts with the bandits in Buxton.
“However, he explicitly stopped short of linking the PNCR to Sawh’s murder.”
“Another angle was that Sawh was involved in criminal activities. Sawh was said to be close with a suspected money launderer (named) and known alien smuggler who owns a fish farm “which appears to be a money laundering operation.”
The cable disclosed that this “money launderer” was previously arrested with several Guyanese and U.S. passports but later was acquitted of wrongdoing.
“As Minister responsible for fisheries, Sawh would have had an ostensible reason to meet with …(named).”
However, another theory was the Sawh was a “clean minister relative to many of his peers. Sawh took too strong a stand against criminal activity. Some are saying that Sawh took a lead role in urging the Cabinet not to issue forestry permits to suspect concerns, which pitted him against the drug lords.”
WikiLeaks, which released the secret cables, is an international non-profit organisation that publishes submissions of private, secret, and classified media from anonymous news sources, news leaks, and whistleblowers. Its website, launched in 2006 under The Sunshine Press organisation, claimed a database of more than 1.2 million documents within a year of its launch.
It has been highly controversial and raised the ire of several governments across the globe for the potentially embarrassing leaks.

Django

Boland was a racist and supported the PNC cabals who controlled the drug trade. they murdered Sash Sawh and tried to blame the PPP.

They also sent Jimmy Carter to help the PNC rigged the 2015 Election. How can you not hold a recount when the APNU/AFC won Region 8 by only one vote?

R

The PNC helped the PPP put down the freedom fighters. I will not say on this board how they did it.  There was no space in the Guyana political environment for a dangerous radical group like that.
