President Bharrat Jagdeo inspects his gift, while the artist, Winslow Craig, explains the symbolism of his creation.
PRESIDENT Bharrat Jagdeo was last evening presented with ‘The Guardian” by the Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali and his staff, to mark his 12 years of leadership, which has positively impacted the lives of all Guyanese.
The ornately sculpted ceremonial chair -‘The Guardian’- was formally handed over to the Head of State during the inaugural Christmas tree light up hosted by the Ministry of Housing and Water and the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA).
In his remarks, President Jagdeo expressed his gratitude for the “unexpected gift” while recognizing that the Guyanese sculptor, Winslow Craig, is widely known for his splendid work and has indeed “surpassed all expectation” with the intricately embellished chair.
He pointed out that, though appreciative of the gesture, it is the hard working staff of the Ministry of Housing and Water who are deserving of the appreciation of the Guyanese people.

“We in the government have worked very hard to create an atmosphere that is conducive to the development, growth, changing lives and making sure that our people are constantly seeking and receiving better welfare, the people who actually do the work sometimes go unheralded… many times it is not easy,” President Jagdeo explained.
He expressed the hope that the hard work and earnest efforts will continue under the leadership of a new president.
“I am stepping away from the leadership of this country, but the person who takes over as the new president deserves all of our support, and we should work day and night to make his term successful, to make the government successful because when we are successful, our country moves forward.
President Jagdeo called attention to the fact that the country has progressed without the intervention of foreign management or consultation, particularly in the Housing and Water sectors, headed by young, smart individuals, and he commended Minister Irfaan Ali for his role in this process.
“Quite a few ministries progress forward when they have strong leadership and I want to commend Irfaan Ali for the strong leadership in the sector; I thought this ministry needed him for a bigger task and he has vindicated every confidence that I had in him,” he said.

President Jagdeo declared that Guyana has a bright future ahead, with the expansion in the bauxite, manganese and gold industries, which will generate close to $600M in revenue annually.
He declared, “I believe that the best days are ahead; not in any abstract way, but in a real way.”
Later, the minister took the opportunity to commend the Head of State for his strength and resilience during his tenure as leader of the country, through extremely difficult times.
“President Jagdeo, in this chapter of his life, has seen his fair share of challenges, the worst floods in the history of this country, the world went through its worst fuel crisis, food crisis, and its worst economic crisis during his years of presidency, and Guyana today can celebrate, a country that is solid, stable and sustainable,” Ali explained.

He noted that it was the expectation to have Parliament Square completed before President Jagdeo demits office, as this is also one of his ideas; but he assured that, when completed, it will be the “pride of Guyana” in the evolving transformation taking place.
Ali also assured that his staff will continue to work hard, to ensure that the vision of having every Guyanese owning his own home and access to water would be accomplished, since the foundation has already been laid.
Presentations were also made by the CEO for CH&PA, Myrna Pitt, and the CEO for GWI, Nigel Niles, who both gave an overview of the growth of their sectors over the last 12 years.
After the formal ceremony, the staff, their families and special invitees, joined in signing Christmas carols and witnessed the much awaited lighting of the Christmas tree, perched atop the Housing Ministry.
