President Donald Ramotar this evening flicked the switch to illuminate the Christmas tree at Rahaman’s Park, Houston to usher in the Christmas season.

The annual Christmas tree light up is now a six-year old tradition that was first conceptualized by former Minister of Tourism Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad who convinced the private sector to be a major patron.

This year as every other, featured solo performances of Christmas songs by popular local artiste Tenicia De Freitas, who sang “The Christmas Song” Shawn English who performed “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” and Karissa Couchman, doing “Oh Holy Night” and pannist Timothy Tyndall who played at instrumental Christmas melody.

The presence of Santa Claus supplemented the treat, especially for the many children gathered.

President Ramotar while addressing the gathering said the sentiments of Christmas are descending all around, evident by expressions of happiness, unity, sharing, love, peace and goodwill.

“That is the beauty of this season, the Christmas season which is enjoyed by all the people of this country and further afield,” President Ramotar said.

Reminiscing on 2011, President Ramotar described it as one filled with many activities, the highlight of which was the hosting of the general and regional elections.

“Elections results have told us that we must work together and if we capture the spirit of goodwill… that Christmas offers us and we maintain it in the next year or so I believe that we can work hard together to build our common home Guyana,” President Ramotar said.

The hustle and bustle in the city is symptomatic to the Christmas season in Guyana and Minister of Housing and Water who spoke on behalf of the Tourism Ministry disclosed that the season will see an additional inflow of international travel to Guyana.

He explained that in December, the projected increase in arrivals will be four percent while the overall increase in visitor arrival for 2011 is 1.2 percent higher than the record high figure in 2010.

A new airline, EZjet Jet is expected to touch down in Guyana tomorrow, to supplement the fleet of airlines operating in Guyana.
