President and Team at UN Indigenous forum

[www.inewsguyana.com] – President Donald Ramotar, Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai, Minister of Foreign Affairs Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett and Guyana’s Ambassador to the United Nations, George Talbot are currently attending the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, World Conference on Indigenous People at its headquarters in New York.

The President also held a meeting with Guyanese living in Brooklyn and according to reports the no-confidence motion and local government elections were among the many issues that were discussed.

Minister Rodrigues-Birkett has said that whilst the international community is busy discussing the post-2015 development agenda with the deadlines for meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) being 2015, the focus now is post- 2015.

The Minister observed that the climate change agenda is picking up, with an international agenda set for a legally binding agreement for 2015. As such, she pointed out, in the margins of the UN General Assembly there will be a climate change summit to be hosted by the UN Secretary General, Ban-ki-Moon.

President Ramotar is slated to make a presentation during this summit. Minister Rodrigues-Birkett said he is expected to speak about promises and commitment for financing, relating to mitigation and adaptation.

Did anyone here attend the President's welcome function yesterday in Brooklyn? I passed by at 4:30 PM but the function was due to start in an hour's time. I thus left to return but got caught in humungous traffic on Manhattan's West St highway by Holland Tunnel area. I saw about 7 persons holding AFC posters like the one above - all Afro-Guyanese.

It would be nice to be filled in on how the meeting went.

BTW this week in the City will be horrendous for traffic. Today outside my office was  a large group of protestors with "Flood Wall Street" posters and flags - the clean air protestors. Yesterday it was Leonardo di Caprio who led the march in midtown.
