I NEVER doubted that Donald Ramotar, when nominated as his party’s presidential candidate, possessed the qualities necessary for presiding over the affairs of this nation.
There were those who were quick to compare him to his great predecessor, former President Bharrat Jagdeo; but, they forgot that it was the latter’s full support that had been instrumental in Ramotar’s choice as nominee, and the ensuing campaign support during the hustings, that ended in his election victory.
Surely, former President Jagdeo’s support has been well founded, as would have been expected.
It is now a little over two months since Donald Ramotar’s accession to office, and certainly he has adequately demonstrated that indeed he is the man for the hour, ready to continue the great mission of moving the nation to a greater plateau of social and economic development for the benefit of the Guyanese people.
He has exhibited a calm and purposeful leadership that is necessary at this challenging time of the nation’s leadership, but displaying a firmness, as exemplified during his parliamentary address, when he warned that he will not allow his government to be held ransom by the opposite side of the House.
Another example was his forthright statement on declaring that the budget is the executive’s responsibility. There is no doubt that he is in firm and full control of the ship of state.
Equally too, he has shown that there is a very light side to him, as evidenced by the many social engagements he has undertaken since.
There is even a pictorial in Monday’s Chronicle of his participation in a cricket match during a visit to his birth place at Karia Karia, Essequibo, Region 2.
It is a given rule that leadership of any socio-economic level of nation will be challenging for any who will succeed to its summit. One does not have to be necessarily a prior holder of cabinet office, to be able to succeed at that crown point, as some in the opposition camp had so foolishly been attempting to propagate during the last election campaign.
History is littered with numerous examples of unknowns who rose to the hour when entrusted with executive power. Such category came to office with a vision, coupled with a competent corps of advisors.
President Ramotar was no novice or political greenhorn, as can be adduced from his decades of service within his party, more so his long period as general secretary and chief spokesperson which gave him an informed finger on the pulse of the nation’s direction.
He has a defined vision of what he intends to achieve for his people and country. And already, one can discern this pattern, as gleaned from his first state visit to neighbouring Suriname.
He is not seeking self-glorification, but tangible economic benefits for his country.
As a man of the people, President Ramotar will continue to govern in the best interests of the Guyanese masses, eventually bringing to bear his particular style in good time.
