President Ramotar must ensure that Minister Ramsaran resigns

April 23, 2015 | By | Filed Under Letters

DEAR EDITOR, “Darling I am sorry, but is you mek me hit yuh” is  Minister Ramsaran’s tone  in what the media is sharing as his apology for expressing his fantasy to not only slap up a woman who demands accountability from him, but also that he will get his women to strip her. Many men and even women across the political spectrum would agree with the Minister, – is “de woman ‘mek’ – the woman ‘provoked him’ to anger. There is no accountability, no personal responsibility for the underlying sexist attitudes which guide Minister Ramsaran’s behaviour.  His contempt for the women of his party is also clear – he believes that the women of the PPP would join him in stripping any woman who questions his work. It is now clear why the health sector has not developed its role in responding to domestic violence and sexual violence. It is clear why there is no concern or responsibility for the lack of rape kits at the hospitals. The PPP which passed the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act and the Domestic Violence Act has degenerated into one which supports and nurtures a Minister who has deep contempt for women and whose Ministry cannot fulfil its obligations to women. President Ramotar must ensure that Minister Ramsaran resigns.  Apologies are not the penalties for the assaults on women which the Minister desires when he says he is provoked to anger. Beri Beri is clearly well known since according to Freddie, Mrs J covered for him. Ramotar, did nothing to sanction his untoward behavior to the young reporter and excused it away.

None of the head honchos who were quick to Jump all over Moses for commenting domestic abuse cannot be used as a qualification for office. Ones work in the area is necessary here. But they jumped all over him and said he disrespected the PM candidate. He did not.

He told them exactly what we see happening here; domestic abuse and abuse of women is being used as a stepping stool and not as a sincere attempt of the party  to address this  epidemic in our society.

They have never addressed it in any sustained and deliberate way. They always are silent or ignore it when even the odious cases are presented like the beating of the Amerindian woman caught on video. They will not address this as the did not address Mr Jagdeo's abuse of his wife.

The PPP may loose some votes because of this event. This guy should be sacked as he is now a liability to the government, although I doubt that this would ever happen.

This is a cultural problem in Guyana that would take a long time to fix as women are generally not treated with respect. However, I am glad to see that so much people are rising up against this sort of behaviour.

in regards to the apologies, I doubt whether the Minister was sincere in his apologies, given the statements he made after issuing the apology. This minister's behaviour is beri beri bad.
