President reveals plan to establish oil and gas institute

Dr. Irfaan Ali

President Dr. Irfaan Ali, says there are ongoing deliberations to establish an oil and gas institute in Guyana.

President Ali disclosed this while delivering the feature address at the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association’s 25th annual presentation of awards ceremony this evening.

“We have commenced discussions on having a world-class, world-rated oil and gas institute and training center right here in Guyana and we will achieve it, we must achieve it,” the President stated.

The institute, he said will not only train Guyanese but also oil and gas workers in the Caribbean.

Since taking office, the President has been keen on building local capacity to tap into the oil and gas sector in particular. He has announced that from 2021, the government will be offering 20,000 scholarships to Guyanese in various fields.

Additionally, it was announced on Wednesday by Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat that President Ali has received the final report on local content.

Delivering his opening remarks at the Guyana Oil and Gas Virtual Summit on Tuesday, President Ali said the PPP/C administration is “developing a Local Content Policy and Law, which will promote local participation in the sector. The policy is being developed through a consultative process, including through the examination of best practices around the world.” [Extracted and Modified from DPI]

Let me add that it's better to have your own institution rather than sending people abroad to study oil and gas, etc. If hotels are building, institutes and schools should take precedent in this new era.

We have our own institutions but they are not equipped to cater to the development plans the government is embarking on. we have UG yet students are going abroad to get an education. Hotels are built by private enterprise, not by the Government. It takes time to develop a country.  Money does not grow on trees.

Let's see how he does in fulfilling this promise. I would absolutely consider taking a course or two to this said institute. I am still very much driven to help learn and contribute to the place I still call and consider home.

Plenty talk and no actions. Less talk, choose one project and get on with it.

They need to move GECOM into a state of the art facilities and placed in the Corentyne. Georgetown flooding anyway. Any afro who tries to steal an election will feel the brunt of Indo power if placed on the Corentyne.

Linden would be okay too, if the PPP wants other Mingo Attempts. Attempts of rigged elections will never go away, the PNC will always get 31 seats and will desperately seek the other 1 seat.

Well!  if he has the money, it will happen.  It's only a matter of time.

All the progress that is being made by the PPP could be destroyed if the Coalition is re-elected in 2025.

The oil is in the middle of the ocean. Oil creates about 1 % employment. What is wrong with the PPP brains. Dey should be invest in other areas. And train ppl for those jobs, not the oil sector. Guyanese will never benefit from local content. Dey doan have the expertise. Americans and Trinidadians have that under control.

Maybe they should hold off for now because just as how China has control of Exxon's Iraq's oilfields, watch out Guyana. They'll send their own people and throw the Guyanese people to the curb.

Why is Guyana desperately beating horses that's on their way to the glue factory? Isn't sugar and oil on the way out?

Dey not creative. Suh, they flogging only the things they know. People of color doan know bout developing a country. That is the art of white folks, they will use slaves, indentureds, dirt cheap labour and bullyism in not paying the due costs. In all end, they will develop whatever it takes for civilization.

The Middle East, Japan, China, Singapore, etc. did not use white folks to develop their country.
