Representatives of the University of Guyana, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and University students at the signing of the MoU between the two bodies yesterday

The University of Guyana will revamp its Languages Programme. This follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday, between the Embassy of The People’s Republic of China and the University.

The MOU will provide a $4.6Million grant to fund the acquisition of furniture, computers, headsets and other items for the creation of a new language lab. The facility is expected to be functional in September 2018, for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Planning and International Engagement, Dr. Barbara Reynolds envisions every graduate of UG being able to speak a second language within a few years, “as a result of our developing business climate in Guyana.”

“It’s obvious that if as Guyanese and we’re the only English-speaking country in the South American continent, a lot of our business is conducted in languages other than English”, she said.

Reynolds further added, “We want to interact with our neighbours. We want to welcome tourists and investors to Guyana, and for us to be able to do so effectively we need to be able to have a high level of proficiency in another language, to be able to represent Guyana well, to be able to negotiate effectively and to be able to engage with others.”

Reynolds believes immersion and practical experience in the various foreign languages is of extreme importance, “For us, immersion in the language is critical, and next to immersion is having a fully functional language lab.”

She explained, “It’s a lab to satisfy a particular need and so obviously we want to ensure our students have the opportunity for immersion.” The University Guyana is engaged in pursuing the establishment of an academic programme in Mandarin.

Whai is craziness is to ask university students to google translate when they need to learn languages professionally. I speak Spanish from being among Hispanics. When I decided to be an interpretor, I had to study gramatical Spanish by the book.

Why do you need $4.6 million to learn languages?  What happen to Google Translate and many many free online classes.  This is craziness.

for a teacher this is surprising...should they also get rid of foreign languages at the US universities since people can learn via google translate

BTW, before people get confused, I assume they speaking bout 4.6 mill Guyana dollars which is only 23K US, but I sure you may know better

Google Translate is not a solution or means for learning any language.  Pronunciation, tone, context etc are important to learn and understand.  Video and listening may cover some of the basis.

Some people just like to "babble", no pun intended!

You need to learn to spell and write a proper sentence before you can be a translator or should I say "translater"?  How does one learn a language "professionally"? I am surprised you are a translator.

I learned several languages in a classroom setting and while I was able to read and write them well, I only learned to speak fluently by listening repeatedly to the audio.  I recently taught myself online to speak Italian as there are tons of videos on the internet.

There are children who do not know sentence construction in their first language who can speak another language fluently.  The learning process is primarily by listening.

Languages at the university level beyond elementary classes are literature. The books are written in the language you are studying.  For me personally, once you already learn to speak the language, then the literature is not necessary.  Once in a while when I'm traveling and I don't recognize a word, I would check it on my Google Translate App.

What is your issue with the Chinese setting up a language lab in Guyana?  If was under the PPP you'd be all over singing like a fly on cow shit.

You don't know of what you speak!  You have no clue, especially when it come to languages like Manderin!

Ok, you are an Uber genius, Ivy league educated, Wall Street corner office, high-flying guru.  The average mortal is not up to your par.  The GoG is catering for mere mortals!
