Sam Hinds Jr

[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Prosecution is awaiting advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on how to proceed with the court case against Sam Hinds Jr, the son of Prime Minister Samuel Hinds.

Following this advice, the Prosecution will then have to make its submission before Magistrate Annette Singh on April 08, after which Hinds Jr’s Lawyer, Peter Hugh will respond.

The 33 – year – old miner was found guilty of unlawful wounding on February 06 by former Magistrate Geeta Chandan – Edmond.

He was scheduled to be sentenced by the very Magistrate on February 20 but on that same day, Chandan – Edmond was dismissed by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

iNews understands that based on the rule of law, Hinds Jr cannot be found guilty of the same offence twice; however, Magistrate Singh said the only way a trial can restart is if the guilty verdict has been appealed.

She noted that the Court has no jurisdiction to do so and as such the Court’s opinion is to sentence the defendant.

Hinds Jr of lot 83 Duke Street, Kingston, Georgetown was found guilty of wounding his teenaged sister-in-law Tenza Layne, after he accused her of stealing his phone. He is currently out on bail.

On the day in question, February 27, 2014, Hinds and the victim had an argument over the missing cell phone, where he stomped Layne before dragging her on the ground and beating her with a cane. He then brandished a gun, cranked it and threatened to kill her.
