Children and staff of the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation centre today expressed their profound gratitude to Head of State, Bharrat Jagdeo for his outstanding achievements and contribution toward the development and creation of opportunities for children with disabilities at the centre and, more so across the country.

The President was treated to a range of cultural presentations put on by the children and staff and was presented with several tokens of appreciation.

President Jagdeo is no stranger to centre, as he makes annual donations, and finds time to interact with the children. The centre’s 50-plus children were overwhelmed with joy as the President spent several hours interacting with them.

He also used the event to have one on one discussion with students and staff and provided them the opportunity to raise matters of concern.

“The work done here is wonderful and I know all of you have a bright future so it is good to see you again…as you know I am leaving the Presidency but, I am not leaving Guyana and, the love for this country, and all of you will see me in the future at your centre,” President Jagdeo told the students.

He also expressed gratitude to the staff and other volunteers who have dedicated their time working to create and afford the children a bright future.

“While not everyone in this life has the same opportunities or are as fortunate as others, we all have an equal place in this land of ours, Guyana….we all deserve love and every child deserves the right to be loved,” the Head of State said.

This year, President Jagdeo said $20M was allocated in the National Budget to be disbursed to centres and groups in the country.

Creating opportunities for disabled children

“We want to start doing things that go beyond just supporting people who live with disabilities through centres, we want to create opportunities for them directly in society,” President Jagdeo said.

Against this background, the President informed them that Government is looking at investing in the establishment of call centres in rehabilitation centres across the country “ so that people there can perform functions for the Government, things that we do on a routine basis and receive a salary at the end of the month”.

The differently able persons, he said, have been involved in transformation of this country and will continue to under this Government.

“I know it’s challenging but you will play that role … Ptolemy Reid centre has set a huge example with the love, care and attention given to these children and if this can be replicated in our society it will make a big difference,” President Jagdeo said.

The President will also be granting early Christmas cheers, as he promised to provide five computers and a 30 seater bus to the centre.

Over the years, the President has been assisting a number of centres and schools with computers and other accessories as part of Government’s ICT thrust.

The mission of the Centre is to provide especial education for all the nation’s children with physical or developmental disabilities to ensure they attain their highest potential.

The centre, in addition to providing long-term physical rehabilitative care, also provides rehabilitative services, including physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy.
