Ad well-intentioned this thread is meant to be, I have to say it is a futile exercise.

An Internet chat forum is an OPEN forum. the only code of conduct that the privilege of posting here enjoins us to follow is to not use language that is outlawed in society - like the "N" word, Nazi talk, etc. In a forum like this there is the additional responsibility to not reveal one's personal information (like residences or social security numbers).

We should all cuss down and buze down and express disdain, etc. All I try to encourage is meaningful dialog (no matter how disagreeable). When the tenor of the discussions becomes bottom-house you can drop out. If the entire set of threads demeans us in the Diaspora then we are free to drop out entirely - ask to be removed from the GNI database.

Other than that it is useless to legislate behavior and content on an OPEN Internet forum. We have to be self-regulating or else good people will leve and this forum will die. Simple as that.

so Kari are you in favor of the recent demeaning comments that some members have been posting. People need to show some moderation.

The good people here will make their responses known. (I spoke out about the Manikchand demeaning posts - a reflection of the poster's stupidity and nothing about Priya, whom we all know to be a disaster). Amral, I did suggest recently that you can have a "fish market" type forum where everything goes and one, maybe this forum, that is strictly moderated and suspensions administered when someone crosses the line. It should be a forum where people are civil and discuss issues or ideas as opposed to the "fish market" where you will allow more freedom.

Nah, P_Kalamity. Self-censorship and self-regulation are better than central-control, other than the obvious no-nos that are established. Internet chat forums were made to be like fish-market, not moderated to no end with suspensions. I sound Rumsfield-esque saying this but freedom is messy. Eventually people will get disgusted with the behavior you want regulated and it will stop.

This is exactly the problem.  We have powerful people in Guyana who are just as immature as the posters, and might hassle those who they consider to be "anti-gov't".

The saddest thing about the PPP is that they were supposed to remove the lingering traces of Burnhamism, but instead have adopted it with gusto.

To be against the ruling party is to be "anti-gov't", and also a "traitor".  And any one is free to do what they wish to "traitors", or their families.

So no.  This is a PPP site and so any one who posts their real names does so with real risk.

And Amral when one becomes a public figure one exposes themselves to all sorts of commentary from the general public.  Sometimes good, but more usually bad, given how most people are.  So I fail to see why people take umbrage to calling the minister fat.  She is fat, and she is a public figure. Now if she has a fat daughter, that is another matter as that person is not a public figure, and so we ought to respect their privacy.
