Men removing the Gandhi statue

A statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the famed Indian independence leader, has been removed from a university campus in Ghana's capital, Accra.

University of Ghana lecturers began a petition for its removal shortly after it was unveiled in 2016 by India's former President Pranab Mukherjee.

The petition said Gandhi was "racist" and African heroes should be put first.

In the wake of the row, Ghana's government at the time said the statue would be relocated.

Lecturers and students told the BBC that the statue, originally located at the university's recreational quadrangle, had been removed on Wednesday.

The university confirmed this, saying that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration was responsible.

Law student Nana Adoma Asare Adei told the BBC: "Having his statue means that we stand for everything he stands for and if he stands for these things [his alleged racism], I don't think we should have his statue on campus."

Mahatma Gandhi was one of the most celebrated figures of the 20th Century. He is best known for leading non-violent resistance to British colonial rule in India.

However, as a young man he lived and worked in South Africa, and although he has inspired people throughout the world his comments on black Africans have been controversial.

In his early writings he referred to black South Africans as "kaffirs" - a highly offensive racist slur. He also said that Indians were "infinitely superior" to black people.Lecturers and students at the University of Ghana pose in celebration after statue is removed [12 December 2018)

I told you people, you think blacks are not racists. They are more racist than whites. I told you a Ghanian recently told me if they had their way, there will be no more whites left in Africa. They have the same plans for Indians. And the PNC have the same plans for indo-Guyanese.

Indians who like cuss the White man and pump their chest behind BLM, ayuh try!

This man  is a symbol for peace and humility, what is going on with these people.

Gandhi was a political saint. The man who praised The Prophet Mohamed, would never say something derogative about anybody.  He fought for the rights of Indians in South Africa  against the Apartheid Whites and that's what he did best, fighting against injustice.

So far good sense has prevailed in Guyana. On the 100th birth anniversary of Mohandas K Gandhi in 1969 then Prime Minister Forbes Burnham unveiled a statue of the Mahatma in Georgetown's Promenade Gardens. Also in Georgetown since 1972 there is a Non-Aligned Movement monument that features busts of four prominent NAM leaders including Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana and Jawaharlal Nehru of India. Whatever luck race-cursed Guyana is blessed with, both monuments still stand intact and in peace. Let them stay so.

Gilbakka, a Rasta man had cut off Nkrumah's head from the Non- Aligned monuments and took it home.  Fortunately, his wife called the police when she saw him with the head. Eventually the head was cemented back on the body of Nkrumah's monument. There is a long mark around the neck of Nkrumah's monument.

I wonder if the white man thought ahead and wondered if they left the blacks in America, what would happen. If they only knew what they see today, their decision might have been to send them back. Just my thought.

The white man was too greedy and kept many slaves after freedom, because replacement workers were not readily available.

The contracts could have also specify that all indenture labourers return to their country after five years. But who would be left to do the white man's work. Greed and wealth kept the Blacks and Indians there.

How so?

Many Afro-Guyanese are direct descendants of Ghana and the Ashanti tribe. The current President of Ghana have previously visited and already extended to any Guyanese to ability to visit Ghana without the need of a visa. We cannot deny our heritage.

You forgot one thing Rochelle.  Many Indo Guyanese like Prashad and other Guyanese of other races also got Ghana/Ashanti blood and can back it up with DNA results.
