Heavy rainfall that left the outfield at Gilbert Park waterlogged, prevented Barbados’ reply after Guyana scored 149 all out as the regional U17 50-over tournament concluded yesterday in Trinidad and Tobago.
The other fixtures between Trinidad and Tobago and Leeward Islands at Brian Lara Stadium and Windward Islands and Jamaica at the National Cricket Centre, were also ruined by rain which prevented an exciting finish to the tournament. Following the penultimate round, the host nation, Barbados, Leeward Islands, Windward Islands and Guyana were still in with a chance, but Trinidad and Tobago retained the title after the spoilt final round.
Guyana were asked to bat at Gilbert Park and Alex Algoo and Sachin Singh put on 26 for the opening stand before Algoo was caught off Ramon Simmons for nine after driving his previous ball to the long on boundary. Sinclair was then removed by Matthew Forde without scoring as Guyana lost their second wicket with the score on 27.
Singh and Anderson then added 41 for the third wicket with sensible batting on a difficult pitch. The pair rotated the strike nicely with nudges and pushes until Singh played back to a good length ball from spinner Rikeem Headley (1-25) and was bowled for 29 off 70 balls. Anderson started off slowly but just as he was getting into his stride, moved down the pitch a bit too early and was stumped off Indal Persaud (1-17) for 25 off 70 balls, leaving the score at 87-4.
The Guyanese found boundaries hard to come by on the heavy outfield, but Kevin Christian steered Simmons to third man for a couple, while Nedd drove Forde to mid-off and steered him to the third-man region for a few more.
But in an attempt to step up the scoring rate, Christian played across the line attempting a big hit and was bowled by Simmons for 25 in the 45th over; he faced 66 balls. Nedd struck Forde over cover for four before hitting Simmons to cover to depart for 23 off 47 balls as they Guyanese once again failed to carry on after getting decent starts.
Gevon Schultz (03) and Kevin Umroa (03) departed shortly after before Reaz Khan was run out for two. Pradesh Balkishun, batting at number nine, was caught off the last ball of the innings for eight. The Guyanese only managed two boundaries in their innings as Forde captured 4-34 and Simmons 3-44; Barbados claimed 0.7 fast bowling points.
A heavy down pour then caused the game to be abandoned. Trinidad and Tobago who were set to chase 216, finished on 19.8 points, while Barbados ended on 15.3 followed by Windward Islands 14.5, Leeward Islands 13.4, Guyana 13.3 and Jamaica 1.3.
